Formatting or links in forum posts?
Nov 8 2007, 7:46 PM EST | Post edited: Nov 8 2007, 7:46 PM EST
I'm used to MySpace, which is a pretty crude tool really, but one thing you can do is put formatting into forum (group) posts. They don't provide a toolbar for it, or anything like that, but you can enter simple HTML.

My hunch is it won't work in these forums, but I'll do a simple test:

<b>bold</b> <i>italics</i>

Once I post this I can check to see how that is displayed.

Nope, no HTML for formatting. I'll try a link:

OK, no formatting and no links.

I don't really need formatting or graphics, but links are critical in this webbed world we need in. I'd like to see them added soon soon soon. I'll post something in the "request for future enhancements" forum.

Links that are internal to the site that you are on will work automatically. Here's an example:
http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Release+Highlights

External links are disabled as a deterrent to spammers.

Text formatting options and the ability to add images or widgets to a post are probably coming soon.

That's great news! It is the internal links that I was thinking about as being most important. It's much easier to talk about a particular wiki page in a forum if you can simply link to it, as opposed to describe it.

Regarding external links, everyone is concerned about spam, but disabling external links is a drastic step to take to reduce it. Wikis aren't worlds unto themselves. Every wiki is about something in the outside world that has to be referred to. Can you imagine Wikipedia without external links?

We are talking about clickable hot links though, not simple URLs that you can cut and paste to your browser. The ability to use cut-and-paste URLs makes a big difference. Anything can be linked to that way, and it doesn't really take much work to follow the link.

I followed the example link to the notes on the recent release and was impressed. MySpace never fixes anything and adds about one feature a year. It looks like Wet Paint is very responsive to user requests.

Thanks for the feedback! As Jeremy says we are considering adding more WYSIWYG functionality to our discussion forums. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

There are other ways to deal with spammers, e.g., requiring that a visitor join the site (no anonymous posting) and forum moderation.

Site owners who don't want to moderate forums and want to allow anonymous posting can leave it the way it is.

The more flexibility the better for the end user, all other things being equal.

Thanks,

Mark

P.S. Being able to edit forum posts is another much-needed feature.

Some sites that need moderation must allow anonymous posting. Wetpaint Central is one of them. External link farming hurts all Wetpaint sites, as it lowers the search engine value. There may be ways we can do it in the future, though. We're looking into it. Do you find this valuable?

Hi Jason,

I appreciate the prompt reply.

I understand the SEO implications of spammy links and agree that it is a serious concern. I didn't realize that WP Central required anonymity; I would vote for recruiting a bunch of mods who would zap the spamalots fast and furiously. ;o)

All the Best,

Mark
