Taken Username
Apr 10 2007, 12:04 PM EDT
The invite people on my site wg-e1.de couldn't create an account. When they accept the invitaton and want to register, the wetpaint-site ALWAYS says that the Username is taken by another user. But it isn't so. What should I or the invited people do to join the site?

Instead of having them use the link in the invite, have them try going straight to your site and then clicking on the "Sign up" option. Let us know if that works any better.

"Instead of having them use the link in the invite, have them try going straight to your site and then clicking on the "Sign up" option. Let us know if that works any better."I'm encountering the same problem right now with stakeholders I've asked to preview my wiki before we change its status to public. Is there any progress being made on fixing the link in the Wetpaint-generated invitation? If invitees can't register because it appears to them that every possible combination of letters and numbers are taken as usernames, what is the point of the invite feature? Invitation links work for a vast majority of the thousands of invitations that are received every day. For some people, for a variety of reasons, clicking the link sometimes does not work. They could be behind a very strict firewall at a school or a corporation. Their browser security settings could be too strict. Their anti-virus software could also be set up to block the kind of sign-on that we use. Sometimes people are forwarded an invitation that's already been used. We're re-working our invitation process in our next release and hope to have a lot of these issue worked out. As to user names being taken, Wetpaint user names are used on every Wetpaint wiki, not just on your wiki. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thanks! That answers my question. Some of the individuals invited are indeed university professors.

However, the system's response re username is confusing; a red herring to say the least. Can there not be a response that says something about "firewalls and browser settings".Cheers 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

It seems really strange to me that they would be seeing that error message for a random combination of letters and numbers. Even with over a million users, something like wer#$%123 would still be available and that error message shouldn't show. Are they using the Check Username button or is it giving them that error message after they submit the whole form? Not quite sure what this particular person was doing. I just got word from him that he registered successfully after IGNORING the "username is taken" notification! Go figure. :-) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

This whole problem is causing my users endless headaches too.Ours is an invitation only site, so people cannot ignore the link in the invitation e-mails. And if they go to the site directly, there IS no "sign up" option (because it is private), only a "sign in" one. Could you please give us a comprehensive, clear answer about how to avoid/solve this problem? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

BTW this happens to ALL our new users. What else can they do or what can we tell them to do in simple, clear terms as part of our invitation process? Clearly this is NOT an unusual problem and surely there must be a way to find a solution for those of us with private sites where people who go to the site directly (as you advise above) to NOT have a sign up option... Pretty please? Do you find this valuable? |

I've sent invitations to myself from both sites that you are a member on. The invitation links take me directly to the registration page on the site. I tried registering using an available name without encountering any problems. I also tried registering with a name that is already used (i.e "bob"), and in that case it told me that the username is taken. We are not having large numbers of users reporting registration problems recently. My best guess is that the users that you are hearing from about this have something on their network that is interfering in the registration process - a firewall, a browser plug-in, etc. In order for us to find out what is causing the problem, we need to know a lot more about what they are using. 1) What browser version 2) What Operating System 3) What kind of internet connection they are using (is it home, work, school?) 4) What kind of internet security or firewall features are in place on their computer or network. All of the users that are having this problem have something in common. If we can find out what that something is, then we can figure out what the problem is. 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Occasionally the text-only version of invitation emails has a corrupted character translation in it. Take a look at the link. It will look like:http#58&// instead of http:// The : character is being munged. Fixing this is a bit of a manual step. This only affects text-only versions of emails. HTML versions are fine. I'm not sure which site you refer to and II did not see any new members registeriing on the site I am thinking of. I am involved in more than one Wetpaint site.ALL our new members have this problem - not only one or two. As said, it is an invitation-only site and when you go directly to the site there IS NO SIGN UP OPTION, only a SIGN IN one. Very few of them are complete idiots on the Internet. All of us have had to choose alternative names because the ones we want are "unavailable" I have that same problem when I try to invite myself (and I use various operating systems and two different browsers). My new members also have a mix of different browsers & operating systems. Sorry, but this is not a human error, nor one of choosing the "wrong" OS or browser. If you cannot help, it is fine. Just tell us so. An adjustment is needed to the software itself but if it is too much trouble, it is OK. Unfortunately I do not have the time to send e-mails to all our 50-odd members to ask them the question and then compare all of them and try and find the answer. The problem occurs often - not in only a tiny few cases. But if it is not a priority to fix the code that makes this happen, then just tell us that and we'll tell future members to continue to work around the problem by choosing alternative usernames. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Just to clarify:For private sites, clicking on the link in an invitation is the only way to access the site registration page. Going directly to the site and clicking "Sign up" will only work on non-private sites. I'm still not clear on what specific site you are having this problem on. I looked up both sites that you are a member of in our database, signed in on both, and sent a invitation to my email address. Both invitations worked fine and I had no problems with username availability. What kind of usernames are your members trying to register with? I'd be glad to check the database and verify whether or not they are available or not. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
