Can 'Add a new page' default to a template?
Mar 14 2007, 2:31 PM EDT
I'm not sure if this is possible. It always seems to default to a blank page. If this is not already possible please could you consider this feature. Just to clarify, I would like the 'Add a new page' box to default to a selected template rather than a blank page.

Thanks.

I second this. I don't want the community to accidentally create blank pages. That's why I created all the templates! If they really don't like the template content, they can delete it all anyway after the new page is added. Another way to do this would be to add an option preventing a new page from being created until a template (i.e. not a blank page) is selected from the list. Do you find this valuable?

Hi,

No feedback on this? Through testing I have established that my site will not work without this and I imagine it will be beneficial to many others.

Please let me know if it can be considered.

Thanks.

It's a credible idea, although I suddenly cringe at the thought of an entire site consisting of calendar template pages. I'll pass the idea along to the development team for consideration. Any ideas on how to prevent the aformentioned mishaps that are bound to happen to some of the newer users? Do you find this valuable?

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for the reply.

Maybe somebody would have a need for a site of calendar pages though.

At any rate, the site administrator is only going to set the template as the default if the majority of their site should consist of these pages. Also a site consisting of mistakenly created calendar pages would be just as bad as a site full of mistakenly created blank pages anyway.

If you look at a situation where someone may need to have the same image for example on every page. They may want to create a template of a blank page with this image. This should then be the default template to ensure that users create each page with the image included. They might never need a completely blank page.

The only preventative measure I can think of to cut down on mistakes is to make it obvious that a template is being used, maybe a confirmation box or something?

What do you think?

Thanks again Jeremy.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to bring the idea up with the development team this week. I think if it's something we can do without creating too much confusion, then it will be a nice feature to add. Do you find this valuable?

Excellent idea! I'm on board with this possible idea too folks. I would love to see such an option available. Do you find this valuable?

I like the idea, too. While I doubt that it's a huge amount of work, it's not a simple thing to implement, either. If anyone feels it's a critical feature to have, please let us know how you would use it. Do you find this valuable?

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the reply. I will explain specifically why it is critical to my site.

I am planning my site as a free resource which I hope will be useful for thousands of people around the world. As I have said the service is free but I would like users to donate small amounts to charity if they have found it useful and of course if they would like to do so. Therefore every page must have an image link to make the charity donation.

The active site content will all be added by users and it is important that we keep a consistent and tidy layout for the site to work. I have therefore created a template but in doing a small test with a group of users, people were creating blank pages instead of selecting the template which stipulates the layout and includes the link to the charity donation site. If I can make this template the default then this will eliminate this problem and we will then be able to launch the site.

If you have a look at my site http://pronounceaname.wetpaint.com things should become clearer.

Thanks.

Jamie

Hi Jeremy,

I was just wondering if you spoke to the development team about this and what their thoughts were?

Thanks.

There is some interest in implementing a feature like this, but it might be a couple of releases out. The development team has a full load of features to build for the next release (about 3 weeks out), but I will be sure to remind them of the requests for control of the default template choice on new pages. Hi there,

Just wondering if the above can maybe be revisited? Would this still be a possibility or was a decision made not to implement it?

Thanks.

Jeremy,

I, too, would like to make my custom template the default template. I have a handful of navagation links that I want to appear on every page of my Wiki. It's pretty much 100% certain that the random author will use the blank template.

I suspect a minor -- though possibly easy -- improvement like this one will always be low priority and get booted from each new release unless there's a way for users to collectively campaign for it. Is there a place/method for reviewing all improvement suggestions and voting on the ones that are most needed?
