Removing Personal Info From Google Cache from Cancer Survivor Website!
Feb 5 2012, 5:05 PM EST
Our cancer support group website was private and for an accidental period of time it was public and now it is private again. Unfortunately -- personal info of our members is now cached on google despite deleting the info from our page. I went to remove it through Webmaster Tools because it isn't clearing but since I can't verify the site since I am not technically the "webmaster" --This option is not available to me. Does anyone have a suggestion on what we can do? This is awful.

This is an issue with the way Google Webmaster Tools work. It is not available to Sub-Domain sites (like Wetpaint wikis). Webmaster Tools only work on Domain addresses where access to the root directory is available to add meta tags. Since the root directory of Wetpaint wikis is not available to end-users the site ownership can not be verified, making the Tools not available for use.The only way to attempt to remove the cached content from Google is to allow Google to crawl your wiki again. Normally the crawl action is about 4 days between each crawl. The content of a private wiki is not indexed nor crawled. You may want to try this: 1. Transfer the sensitive information to local storage (hard drive) while the wiki is in private mode. This will leave the page blank. 2. Do not delete the page after removing the content from the page(s). 3. Put some irrelevant text onto the page. 4. Make your wiki public until the cached information on Google is replaced by the irrelevant content you placed on that page. 5. Then make your wiki private again. 6. Restore the saved sensitive information to a New Page. 7. Then delete the old page. 8. When the old page is deleted, you will have to delete the revisions of that page in the page history. This should replace the cached page on Google with the irrelevant content and setting you wiki to private will prevent any pages on your wiki to be crawled again. Do you find this valuable? |

Crying Dove -- Our site is public again while we await Google to crawl and replace the Cache. Unfortunately -- the current Cache is dated 1/14/2012. I am thinking it isn't getting crawled every 4 days. Also -- our discussion threads show up too but I can't see the Cache for those. Is there anything else we can do?

Google has given a method to handle such situations but it doesn't work for sub domain sites. And I do not know the intricacies of the internals of Google so instructions given here are an attempt to allow using Google in a normal way to correct the issue. It may or may not work without some experimentation. Can you send me a message with the address for the page in question? I will be better situated to try and remove the page from cache. This would allow me to have the pertinent information, if needed, to discuss with Google (if possible) to do some action on their side. Do you find this valuable? |
