How to remove the custom domain name?
Dec 30 2011, 7:40 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 30 2011, 7:40 PM EST
I let me domain name expire, and no longer have access to the settings pane from my website.
How do I manually remove the domain name from operating on my website, so I can go back to the .wetpaint.com sub-domain?

Thanks.

If you are the creator or an admin on that wiki, follow these steps.
Generally, anyone can get around this issue by editing their "hosts" file
and pointing the domain to the correct IP address.

In windows, the hosts file typically lives in this folder path
C: > Windows > System32 > drivers > etc
There you will find a file named HOSTS
Edit that file in Notepad
You can add a line that looks like this to the file:
# 216.168.54.8 yoursitename.wetpaint.com

This tells your browser to go to that specific IP address (Wetpaint) when you point to that specific domain.

You can remove the custom domain name if it is there.
216.168.54.8 www..yoursitename.com

To find your wikis IP address, you can go to http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp and type in your custom domain address or your Wetpaint wiki address. It should return the IP address.

Once you have gained access to your wiki, then you can take out the redirect from the Cname portion under settings >upgrade section.

Go back to the host file and reverse the process as described here in this thread, This should put you back to a normal state allowing only the domain name. It will remove the loop. Save the file. Open the file in Notepad, and copy the text and send it to me in a message. This way I can look at it and see what has gone awry.

I was able to get onto your site uzicom. Maybe it took a little while to go through. Wetpaint can be slow at doing some things.

"I dont have a problem with my site, only in finding its IP address. I have pinged my site ok but if I try using the IP address it says site not found."
Three items have been brought up in this thread that need to be clarified.
1. Removing a custom domain name. This has been addressed.
2. Adding a custom domain name. The instructions above do not apply to this item.
Here is some info on adding a custom domain name
You are the creator, and that permission level will allow you to get into the setting to change the redirection to a custom domain name. Here are the steps needed to be followed.

1. Purchase you custom domain name and fill out the cdata portion in that process with your Wetpaint URL (http://yoursitename.wetpaint.com) This will tell your domain name service what address is being used in relationship to the custom domain name.
The new address will not take effect until after 48 hours normally.
2. Now we need to tell Wetpaint, what the custom domain name is. This is done on your wiki by going to settings, selecting "Upgrades". Then "Custom Web Address" and put your custom domain URL in the space provided. Continue to follow the instructions on the page until the process is finished. This too, will take 12 to 48 hours to become effective.

For more detailed instructions read through this page.

http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Custom+URLs

NOTE: Keep track of the expiration date of your custom domain name. It is imperative to renew your custom domain BEFORE it expires or change the information supplied in Setting's portion of your wiki if you do not wish to renew. If this is not done, you risk sending your wiki into an unaddressable status, which would require intervention by Wetpaint.

"I dont have a problem with my site, only in finding its IP address. I have pinged my site ok but if I try using the IP address it says site not found."
3. Each wiki on Wetpaint is a sub-domain of Wetpaint's IP address, 216.168.54.8. There is no easy way to find the subdomain addresses. Most tools will only give you the IP address for Wetpaint.com.

If the guide CryingDove provided does not contain setup instructions for the provider you've purchased your domain name from, the settings and terminology should be fairly similar.
You'll need to navigate to your DNS settings, which is sometimes referred to as Advanced DNS, and is normally located in an easy-to-access section of your providers control panel.

Once you've found your DNS settings, you'll need to add a CNAME record that points to your current Wetpaint wiki, which is also called a subdomain.
You'll need to add two new CNAME records. Enter these records exactly as you see them.

www.retirephilippines.wetpaint.com
*.retirephilippines.wetpaint.com

(note, the * is a wildcard entry - for more information on wildcards, see this wikipedia article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildcard_DNS_record )

Once you've successfully entered the above two DNS records, follow the instructions CryingDove provided. The instructions are quoted above.

Thanks for the help guys. The answer I was looking for is - I can't get the IP address. A lesson learned, get the Domain name from one of the 3 listed. I didn't & they want more than the cost of the Domain name to access the DNS.

Plan B time.

That doesn't sound quite right.
Normally, and this is more or less a requirement with domain name management, DNS accessibility is available with your domain name. Otherwise, you'd be unable to use the domain to point to specific websites on the internet.
What domain TLD did you purchase, and what provider did you purchase it from?
I'm interested to see if they provide any alternative options to route your domain with your Wetpaint wiki.

Also, so we're all clear, your question is regarding your domain name, and how to set it up to work with your Wetpaint wiki. Is this correct?

Cheers.

I got the Domain from the UK (I am a Brit) using UK2.net. They pointed me to this link - https://kb.uk2.net/domain-names/how-to-change-or-edit-dns-records/

I get unstuck at STEP 4. If I click the only option I have 'Change Nameserver' I get this only

Change nameservers for **********.com

Name server 1
Name server 2
Name server 3
Name server 4

Specify IP addresses

This doesn't work because of the IP address issue as mentioned earlier. Only option is to pay as much again as the domain cost, to manage it. Cheaper to by from Dotster or GoDaddy & start again. :-(

From the UK2 control panel, please do the following.

1. Select 'Web Hosting'
2. Select your domain name. (ex. yourdomain.co.uk)
3. Enter your Wetpaint wiki as your Destination URL.
4. Enter the name of your website in the Page Title field.
5. Provide a short description of your website. (will be displayed in search engines)
6. Provide a few keywords on what your site is about.
7. Select the 'Update WebDiversion settings' button.

Once you've finished doing that, you'll need to complete Step 3 of the Custom URLs page on Wetpaint Central.
http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Custom+URLs

Your new domain name should now be functional. Please note that it may take up to 48 hours for the changes to work.

Cheers!

WOW....if this works - FANTASTIC.

Just one question before I follow it through, what does this bit mean on their CP - Diversion Method - Inside a frame, with a UK2.NET banner

Cheers

This was pulled directly from the KB article from my original source.

"This is one of the main features available to our clients that purchase Full WebDiversion. If you do not have full WebDiversion, it will say “Inside a frame, with a UK2.NET banner” with no option to change this. If you have purchased Full WebDiversion, you will be able to choose between two options: Forwarded via browser refresh” and “Inside an invisible frame”. Neither of these options will display a UK2 banner. Which one you use for your website is a matter of personal preference. You may wish to try both for a time to find out which one you prefer."

From what I can gather, your website will be displayed inside of an iframe window, and UK2.NET will display a banner advertisement at the side or at the top of your website.
For an additional fee, you are able to purchase the full version of WebDiversion. Doing so will allow for you to remove the UK2.NET banner advertisement.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider upgrading your UK2.NET account, especially since you've paid full price for their services. (roughly $11 US dollars for a .COM TLD)
Other domain providers, such as GoDaddy, provide .COM domain names with full DNS control. GoDaddy is currently selling .COM TLD domain names for $12/£7.50/€9.15 on a yearly basis. The domain hosting company that I personally operate sells .COM names, also with full DNS control, for $11/£6.91/€8.38.

As you can see, other companies do exist, and most give you free, and normally full DNS management capabilities, so you may wish consider looking around for another provider.

Good luck, and I hope all works out for you with UK2.NET. :)

brilliantly explained for even me to understand. I think on following you instructions. I will use UK2 domain & have it point to my site as if I had bought up a name as in mistype version. I will now buy a new primary one with slight name variance from GoDaddy. At least the other name isn't wasted.

Again, many thanks for your patience.

Well this continues to challenge me at every step. GoDaddy won't process my order...!!! I can only guess at the reason why. So.....I have followed the process detailed in Post #14. I can see my site via UK2 & my new Domain name. So now it all depends on what happens with the Wetpaint side of the request. I will post what happens if & when Wetpaint processes it. OK, this journey continues. My 1st domain liveretirephilippines.com if entered loads my site but with a banner for UK2. That is ok as a redirect.

Now I got Godaddy support (excellent btw) to sort my other domain liveandretirephilippines.com. Now the issue is, as seen at http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/GoDaddy #14 this comes up 1st & I entered forward to http://retirephilippines.wetpaint.com/. In a small preview window, it displayed a thumbnail of my site. Now under the main page it says HOST - @ POINTS TO - 64.202.189.170. If I try to change this to my site address it displays a red exclamation mark. The same under 'CNAME (alias)' after www it has a @ but if I enter my site address with or without http:// again it comes up with a red exclamation. If I try to save it says it cannot with errors.

Question - is just changing the panel at #14 'forward to' enough? It said it will take 1 hr. I changed my site custom settings also.

UPDATE - just checked & my new domain does direct to my site. So, now let's see if Wetpaint does their side.
