customize URL
Nov 1 2011, 9:19 AM EDT
Hello, I think of change the address URL of my wiki (www.nameofdomain.com instead of www.namedomain.wetpaint.com), I took a look in the different sites presented here and I saw that it isn't very costly. However, I don't understand very well how it works. I would like only change my address URL and my money is in Euros. Do you know if my credit card will work to pay for a custom URL in dollars? Can I purchase a name of domain already used but available again (there are a lot of names of domain who are available on the net because their former owners have abandoned them) For the promotion of my wiki, is it well to take a name of domain pre-existing or should I create my own name of domain? Your advices are very precious here, I don't speak English very well and sometimes, I don't understand what is explained. Thank you. Keziah. ;)

Keziah, all of the questions you have may be better answered at the Domain Name Server (DNS) company that will host your custom URL. Wetpaint's only involvement is to allow for the redirect away from the Wetpaint supplied URL (Wetpaint.com) to the new DNS URL.

I've read all the pages regarding the addresses URL customization and I found what I looked for. I wanted to know if changing the address URL of my sites could prevent the members of my sites to connect themselves on them? Must they change something on their accounts or must I simply warn them of the change of the address URL? Otherwise, I trust enough to GoDaddy, I recommend it to all those who will come read these pages about the URLs customization. Thank you for your help. ;)

Hey Shahinesgrissom,No need to worry. Nothing will be affected but the URL. Your members will be able to access your site by both the old and new URL. There will be no need for you to warn them of anything. Just let them know you have a new URL should be enough, even though you don't even have to do that. Unless they pay close attention to everything, they will most-likely never notice. :-) -Clay 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thank you very much, it remains me one little step to do and if everything goes well, in one or two weeks, my sites by wetpaint will have a nicer address. Since the time that I think of it, I believe that it's worth it. My PC is dead recently. I used Mozilla since a long time but now, I've just got a new laptop and I use only IE 9 without the module ad block. The ads are very boring but I think that if the wikis need them to be free, I mustn't block them. Having a custom address isn't too expensive, it depends on the name chosen.... I love the wikis, it would be damage to lost them.;)

Hello, I just got my new domain names, I followed your advices but there is one thing that I don't understand : it's about the DNS. I created the CNAME alias like it's explained and then there, I'm a bit lost with this history of update the DNS settings. My CNAME aliases are well recorded and I must wait about 24-48 hours before it is effective. My question is : must I modify or not the DNS which are recorded in my configuration panel (it is written "change your DNS", when I click on it, it is written the DNS of my registrar. This one is based in France due to a problem with the means of payment proposed by your recommended registrars)? I don't want to do a mistake, I will also ask the question to my registrar (like that, I'll have a chance to get a response somewhere...). It's said that we must create a CNAME alias but it's not said if we must change the DNS in the configuration panel or not. It's only said that we must create the CNAME alias then make a change in our wiki settings. I've made a lot of searches with google but I don't find the appropriate response to my question, it's too long to find... What are the DNS of my wiki, where I can find them? I've a few difficulties to understand this... Thank you for help me, because for me, the web language it's like Chinese, unlike English, I understand nothing at this.

In fact, I just login to my private mailbox and I received a message from wetpaint which tells me that my new custom URL is now active. I'm sorry for the disturbance, I don't know a lot the computer language. It proves that your custom URL pages are well explained and I thank you very much for helping me. My registrar seems work well with my wiki, I'm glad to know that I managed to "marry" my country with Uncle Sam (I joke, of course!) See you soon...;)

I changed my Wetpaint settings for a Custom Web Address 3 days ago. It says it takes 12 - 48 hrs. Can anyone say what the current time scale is?

It should be 12-48 hours as it says.I can't guarantee you that you will get a reply, but try sending an email to Wetpaint's Premium Service email alias with the title something around: Custom URL? The email alias is premium@wetpaint.com -Clay Do you find this valuable? |

If my theory regarding the Wetpaint servers having an excessive amount of cache is correct, that could account for the slow synchronization of domain names. So, it's safe to assume that the 24 - 48 hour time estimation is more along the lines of 48 to 72 hours, possibly even more, depending on how slow the cache is at the time the domain is synced. Additionally, cache is known for simply piling up until the service as a whole is nearly unresponsive, unless something is done to 'clean' the cache before it has the time to affect the services as a whole. From what I can tell, Wetpaint has some form of delayed caching system in place, but the delay needs to be set to every two minutes, instead of every couple of days, which is my current estimate, assuming such a system is even functioning at all. That being said, domain synchronization could also be faster than the estimation Wetpaint has provided, which, although unlikely, is entirely possible, especially if the user tries to sync his domain with Wetpaint at the time the cache is being cleared. Still, all users should expect a far longer than expected domain synchronization time. Uzicom, although you may wish to contact Wetpaint in the near future, I'd still suggest for you to wait at least another 24 hours before doing so. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Check with your domain name service provider and see if the custom domain name you have chosen has been activated. That is the starting point. This is the message I emailed: Hi, I bought a domain from Godaddy - www.liveandretirephilippines.com and it successfully points to my wetpaint site http://retirephilippines.wetpaint.com/ I have used the Setting on my site as per instructions & it states Status: Change in Progress You should expect a 12-48 hour delay before your personalized domain is actively pointing to your Wetpaint site. Well it has now been 120 hours & nothing has changed. Can you help? Have I done something wrong (Mods on WPC don't think so) or is there some other issue? Please advise - Thanks Do you find this valuable? |

reply to uzicomAs stated the redirect from Godaddy works fine. Please check step 2 of the Customize Web Address in your site settings, reflects the proper address www.liveandretirephilippines.com When you make the changes in the Setting for a custom domain name it is saved for your wiki immediately and the message "Change In Progress" will appear immediately also. The time frame of 12-48 hours stated by Wetpaint reflects the time it may take the DNS provider to to accomplish their redirection. Since the DNS provider has completed, the only thing that can be wrong is a typo in the custom domain name in the settings portion of you wiki. I will join your wiki. Can you make me an admin so I can view the settings portion of your wiki? Do you find this valuable? |

I customized my URLs a month ago and they work very well. It took about less of three days to see them become active. Wetpaint sent me the messages very quickly and I'm very glad of this, I thank you. I've chosen another site for my domain names because I had a problem with the payment method. I had to choose a domain names site in my country, it was more easy for me. The domain names sites proposed by Wetpaint are also very well and I recommend them sharply for the wetpaint sites. I hadn't the choice and fortunately, I'm lucky that it works. I know nothing about the servers, DNS, ect... but I followed your advices and finally, I managed to get what I wanted. Here is what I done, if it can help you : 1= I'm registered in the domain names site I chosen; 2= I chose the domain names I wanted and I paid them; 3= I had a little problem so I contacted the help central and they answered me quickly, 24 hours later, I got my domain names; 4= I'm gone to my dashboard and I followed the advices that you can read on the wetpaint centrale page http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Custom URLs ; 5= again 24 hours later, I got my wikis with my new customized adresses when I received the messages of Wetpaint. It isn't very easy for someone who know nothing to this but yet, I find the advices very easy to follow... I think that your problem comes of the site you have chosen, you should contact their help central. I don't know if it will help you but don't worry, I'm sure that you'll manage to get help there. In all case, I've not had problem with Wetpaint when I made the link between my Wetpaint URLs with my domain names... **** luck. ;-)

"CDHi Uzicom, I checked and there are no typos and the address supplied in the window in the setting area was copied and pasted into my address bar and took me directly to your wiki. The only information I can supply to you at this point, is I will try to contact Wetpaint somehow and direct them to this thread. We moderators have not been successful recently in contacting Wetpaint. So bear with us. I will do my best to see that this is resolved for you. I have cancelled my membership on your wiki.
