I am the creator of my site, but I don't come up as a writer, nor can I change the permissions of my members. Is this normal? I want my site to be private for my members only, giving them the permission to write. As the creator, I would imagine that I should be able to do this.

Accounts/Users on a Wetpaint site can have these statuses/user permissions:
Creator, Administrator, Moderator, Writer, Registered User, Banned, Anonymous

The Creator has all the rights/tools/permissions on his/her site. You come up as the Creator... not as a Writer or any other status of course... Cause all the other statuses have lesser rights/tools/permissions than the creator of the site.

As Creator, you should be able to change the status/permissions of members.
Promoting them to Writer give these members the tools to create and write on pages. Promoting them to Moderator or Administrator gives the members apart from writing tools... also management tools.
As Creator you have all the tools/permissions already.

If you can't change the permission of your members...
* check whether you have signed into your site...
* check whether you have accidentally changed your permission to only Writer status/Registered User or so ... cause when you did that... you lost all the permissions/rights as Creator on your site.
In that case you need to contact Jeremy: http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/account/jeremy_wetpaint to get Administrator permissions on your site again.

If you are signed in as the Creator... and not able to promote members...
you might want to check browser settings and other requirements for Wetpaint:
