Fake accounts ~ spammers
Aug 31 2011, 9:32 AM EDT
Seems we have another issue with this since yesterday... We banned these accounts for spamming (links to Polish websites) on their profile: http://goldring.wetpaint.com/account/janiccennewton http://goldring.wetpaint.com/account/caroleeeebines http://goldring.wetpaint.com/account/vernellbrroown http://goldring.wetpaint.com/account/christiniawayt http://goldring.wetpaint.com/account/lindarmckenzie http://goldring.wetpaint.com/account/BeettyGrrossoo http://goldring.wetpaint.com/account/heathmallassss We also suspect a bunch of new accounts to be fake ones... (who did not succeed to put up their profiles (yet) ??? ) N.B. The above message is not a request for advise... I'm only reporting this issue, so that Wetpaint can take proper action. Thank You. * 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

We've been seeing this on our site (wsgs.wetpaint.com) since late August, also. Most of them don't have the links to the Polish websites, though. If they've updated their profile at all, it only shows the template for our profile questions with no answers. The pace of the creation of these fake accounts has increased over the past couple of days so that there are dozens of them now. Is there any way to block the creation of these accounts?

What you are experiencing is known as Spam. Spamming is not a Wetpaint issue. It is an INTERNET issue. It is prevalent world-wide. A wiki platform is designed where all can participate in the content of the wiki. A wiki is not a blog, or a website with a sole individual controlling the content. A wiki model is very attractive to spammers. Wetpaint was aware of Spammers and placed tools to deal with them in the overall wiki design. These tools are there for the moderation team. The creator, administrators and moderators can use these tools appropriately to handle spamming. Wetpaint leaves the responsibility of dealing with spammers to the wiki administration team. To assure a wiki is free of spammers takes vigilance. 1. Make sure you have enough members on the administration team to deal with the amount of members and/or content on your wiki. 2. Vigilance takes clicking on the UPDATES link daily, at minimum, to see what changes to the wiki have been made and act accordingly to those changes. 3. Spammer's content (you can tell whether a new member is a spammer or not) should not be allowed to be viewed for more than 24 hours at most. The quicker they are removed the better. 4. Vigilance is the key. Historically, if you are on top of deleting spammer content and banning the spammer, quickly, they will soon tire and vacate your wiki as one of their spam havens. 5. Quick response by your administration team in dealing with spam content will be an easier task than waiting months or years to clean up threads or profiles. I speak from experience on this matter. I spent 4 months assisting a wiki who had let their forums go for 2 years without administration. There were over 45000 spam threads selling illegal products that needed to be deleted and the spammer banned. more to come... 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The bottom line is:A lot of responsibility comes with the titles of Administrator and Moderator. When assigning these permissions, assure the member is willing to take on the responsibilities on a daily basis. With proper moderation of your wiki, your team will provide a great experience for your members. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
