Many get caught up in your situation by not understanding the process of custom domain names.
It is a two-fold process. And the process has to be done in a certain sequence or your site will not be found, as you are experiencing. Here is the sequence.

Wetpaint looks at the Cname to find the address of the wiki to redirect to. If no changes to the Cname have been made, then Wetpaint wiki address will be used. If a custom domain name was purchased, one of the steps was to change the Cname to the new address. The domain name registrar (Godaddy) takes the wetpaint address and redirects it to the new domain name address. The start of the redirects has to be on the Wetpaint Cname side. If that does not occur, you wiki will not be able to be found.

1. The Cname data of the Wetpaint wiki must be changed first pointing the address back to your wetpaint address (www.zionchurchbatticaloa.wetpaint.com) before allowing the domain name to expire.
2. Then the Godaddy name can be changed or allowed to expire without incident of not finding your wiki.

There is only one way to fix your problem. You must contact jerermy_wetpaint, who is a Wetpaint employee to change the information for you on the Wetpaint server for your wiki. Nothing can be done from this side.

Message:

http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/account/jeremy_wetpaint

and he will be able to fix the issue for you. Jeremy does not work on the weekends, so you will have to contact him on Monday.

Jeremy is the only contact we have to the server side of Wetpaint. He does not work weekends, which will cause some delay in response. Be patient with him. His responsibilities are enormous. I would imagine, half his day is comprised of reading emails from the community and then prioritizing them to work on.

Generally, anyone can get around this issue by editing their "hosts" file and pointing the domain to the correct IP address. In windows, the hosts file typically lives at C: > Windows > System32 > drivers > etc
You can add a line that looks like this to the file:
# 216.168.54.8 zionchurchbatticaloa.wetpaint.com

This tells your browser to go to that specific IP address (Wetpaint) when you point to that specific domain.

I think I am missing something here. The instructions will allow a local computer to access the site via Wetpaint.com address instead of the Godaddy address for that particular computer and not all visitors to the wiki. Wouldn't someone with Admin and above permissions have to do this? Then once they have access to the wiki, they can change the Cname properties to reflect the Wetpaint address for that wiki?

Yes, I meant to imply that the site creator or admin should follow those steps and then go into their site settings once they are in and disable the custom URL. At that point, everyone should be able to access the site again.

Are you sure you got to the WETPAINT site or did you get to Godaddy's parked site?

Did the site you went to have a side navigational menu that started with Job Listings, then Discount Shopping? If so, that is the Parking Site that Godaddy uses for expired accounts.

The instructions do not work and will not work. Here is why.

When a custom domain name is set up two addresses are used in two different places.
1. Godaddy in this case, takes the Wetpaint address, equates it to the Godaddy address.
2. In the Wetpaint cname code of the wiki, the Godaddy address is entered and is the first thing that is looked at before it loads the rest of the wiki.

When the http://www.godaddyname.com is used it takes the user to Godaddy to get the Wetpaint address, then takes the user to the hidden http://wikiname.wetpaint.com address. When the http://wikiname.wetpaint.com is loaded it looks to see if the http://www.godaddyname.com is there. If it is the wiki will load.

( If the Godaddy account has expired, Godaddy will send any user to a website that belongs to Godaddy (advertising site). This is called "Parking". Godaddy does this for expired accounts for up to 42 days after expiration. After that time frame, Godaddy totally drops the account. And any attempts to access the http://www.godaddyname.com will simply report "404 URL not found" )

The instructions that are given in this post, does one thing only. It simply says go directly to the IP address in the HOST file and load the Wetpaint address and do not go to Godaddy. The instructions given do that. The only error here, is when the Wetpaint wiki starts to load it brings in the Cname code which says - go to Godaddy before loading the rest of the wiki. Since the Godaddy account has expired, Godaddy then sends the user to the Parked website.

I toiled over these instructions trying to get them to work a year ago, and now toiled over them trying to help the two posts here on WPC get their wikis back and was not able to get to the Cname on either wiki.

The Cname code has to be changed on the server side, and the client side cannot do anything to resolve this.

I have not seen a phone number for Wetpaint posted, anywhere here, in over 4 years that I have been here. The only other route you may take is to email Wetpaint.

information@wetpaint.com

Make sure your reference "Wikis by Wetpaint" somewhere in your email.

Any wiki support related messages sent to that address will just be forwarded to the old address. We are aware of this issue and will try to assist as soon as it is possible for us to do so.

Good news! Your site should now be accessible.

I actually made a mistake in my earlier instruction on this thread. The new line on the hosts file should look like this:
216.168.54.8 www.zionchurchbatticaloa.com

Hopefully that will help for future reference.
