FanTapper app on wikis by Wetpaint sites
Jun 3 2011, 7:27 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 3 2011, 7:27 PM EDT
Hi everyone,

Recently Wetpaint added a third party app called FanTapper to some wikis by Wetpaint sites. The FanTapper app adds some interactivity to photos to allow user access to more information, news, videos, and social media around celebrities. You can learn more about how it works here: http://fantapper.com/how-it-works.php

We decided to add FanTrapper because it both provides additional functionality to users and because it provides Wetpaint with revenue that allows us to continue offering wikis by Wetpaint as a free service. For those that do not want FanTrapper on their site, you can have them removed by purchasing a premium subscription. FanTrapper will be removed along with all other ads.

"provides additional functionality to users"

Have users ever heard of something called Google? They should use it.

Yeah, there's nude images connected to this stuff.

One example: http://tsccwiki.wetpaint.com/thread/3516940/The+NEWS+Thread

If you goto that link and click the Jeremy Piven Fantrapper link it will be a nude female.

Really? Premium? So you can barely maintain the wikis to a good standard, and you decide it's a good idea to start ramming in extra BULL so you can make more money?

Wetpaint has really filled the trunk with too much crap this time. I'm sorry, or no I'm not sorry, if this whole network crashes or everybody leaves, because either it's exploded with the amount of sh*t that's been loaded onto it, or everyone's sick of the overpriced rubbish to get rid of it. Is this business run by monkeys?

I for one, unlike the other moderators, have NEVER sucked up to Wetpaint. And how ironic? I'm the youngest of them (I'm the only British one, too ;D). I never sucked up to Wetpaint, and I never will. I'm happy to help the community, I give them the answers and sympathy they want, job done. But I will never try to save a sinking ship. I can guarantee that I will be sitting on that ship as it sinks and all the little people that are the users fall off the side and into the great pool of sharks that is Wetpaint's staff.

So you can delete this post if you like, demote me for all I care, but I'll carry on helping people, and alongside the demotion or deletion, I DARE you to try and convince me you are fully justified with what you've been doing to these poor, dedicated users.

(Sorry, just hoping I could get your attention, clearly some of the developers have a very short span of such.)

I agree with Cameron.
I'm going to copy-and-paste what I sent to a Wetpaint Staff member I have added, but will remove their name for privacy reasons, and have took out a few lines for other reasons.
(In total, there was over 6,000 characters in my original reply, so that is why this one will be so short, but the others will be long.

"In your own professional opinion, not what Wetpaint tells you to say, do you find the new Fan Tapper App useful?
I find it useless, and a waste of space. I mean, it takes words of celebs and turns it red. It distracts me from the rest of what's on the page.
and We have to go premium to to remove it? That's bull.
I quote from what Jeremy posted on Wetpaint Central:
"allow user access to more information, news, videos, and social media around celebrities." Isn't that what Google and Bing and everything else is for?
Another thing I quote from Jeremy:
"because it provides Wetpaint with revenue that allows us to continue offering wikis by Wetpaint as a free service." It allows you guys to offer this as a free service? So what he's telling everyone, basically, is the following "If we don't add Fan Tapper, we wouldn't be getting money, and we'd have to start making them pay." That's what he is basically saying, right?
Last I checked, Wetpaint added the Entertainment platform to get more revenue. They quit making us new features because of the Entertainment platform, to keep money, and make more money off the Entertainment platform. This Fan Tapper stuff is useless.
If you ask me, FanTapper should be with the Entertainment Platform, NOT the Wiki Platform, considering the fact that FanTapper and the Entertainment platform are more alike than FanTapper and the Wiki Platform."

and I will admit, we Community Mods have sucked up to Wetpaint. Too much if you ask me. I'm pretty sure that's why Rich has quit twice in a row for being a Moderator here. We have been told to keep our mouths shut about some things.
Remember when Kevin was here? Remember when all of us Moderators were starting to speak out, then all of a sudden, we changed our tone and stopped? (Except for Cameron of course. ;D) Well, that's because Jeremy basically told us to shut up. (Or at least that's what Wetpaint told him to say.) He also said that we were making Wetpaint look bad. Just a little note: YOU (Wetpaint) already made yourself look bad by making all these changes. WE didn't. We may have added onto it, but we did NOT end up being the main reason for making you guys look bad. You did this to yourself.
I'm sure all of the Moderators, and Rich even, remember that message from Jeremy. Rich, even though he was not a Moderator for the second time then, knows because I asked him his opinion on Jeremy's message. I doubt anyone has this message still, since it was like in late February early March, but i'm sure we all remember it.
Why should we have had to hide behind Anonymous posting to rant? We're just volunteers. We don't represent Wetpaint. Jeremy represents Wetpaint, NOT us Community Moderators. We have told all members before in the past multiple times: "We do not work for Wetpaint. We are just merely Volunteers." Last I checked, volunteers didn't represent the actual company. Staff members did, not volunteers. Correct me if I am wrong though. and What happened to "We appreciate your Feedback"? We were giving our Feedback then as Community Moderators, yet we were told to shut up. Clearly Wetpaint only wants positive feedback, not negative, otherwise, they'll even look worse than they already do.

Well let me tell you something Wetpaint. You can't look worse than what you already do, in my opinion. You add the Entertainment Platform, you take away new features, and then you add this App, which is considered Malware, and it even show inappropriate pictures now-and-then, and you think just words will make you worse? No, changes to the site is what has made matters worse, not just some feedback on the Help and Support wiki. Clearly we can't post negative feedback even if they stay in the guidelines of the rules.
Just like Cameron's post, you can delete this one, or you can demote me. I'm done stick up for you. It's pathetic. You tell us to tell the members we don't work for you, yet you're saying we represent Wetpaint. Which is it?
Cameron: As for your question of "Is this business run by monkeys?", I believe that question was already answered by Jeremy back when he said "A worker monkey here pressed the wrong button and screwed everything up."
Done posting my big rant.

I was tempted to bring up the quote, but I knew it was a good-natured joke and I wouldn't put Jeremy down for that. After all, he doesn't make the decisions for the developers, he just gets paid to try and make the community accept such decisions. Which, like I said, is defending a sinking boat.

Also, relevant to the quote above, you forgot to mention the poor maintenance of the platform. New problems every five minutes. And go ahead Wetpaint, Jeremy, whoever. Delete these posts. Ban your loyal mod-squad. And hope to hell that we keep helping as anonymous, 'cause you won't be doing it on your own. Unless you're prepared to use the coupla cents earned from FanTapper to pay for another Help & Support Staff Member.

P.S: Love the typos where Jeremy says 'FanTrapper.' It's like a pun.
"Us Wetpaint staff our trapping our fans, or what's left of them" is what that accidental pun is saying.

I doubt this is some trial they are doing...it'll be here for ever. I find it useless and offers NOTHING to members. If they want to find out about stuff they use google or go to the sites they already know. My feed back is they aren't even interested. You come onto a website for a particular reason for that site, not to be re-directed to somewhere else. The photos look hideous with these adds attached to them. Not to mention the red words that stand out and offer nothing but porn, useless unrelated pictures, pixelated pictures or nothing thats of interest anyway...REMOVE FANTAPPER please. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. I second that motion; We spend a lot of time and effort trying to make these wikis suitable for all ages to view and participate in. People know where to go to look for "other" types of stuff if that's what they want to look at, NOT OUR WIKIS!!!
Get rid of Fan TRapper!!

Just want to point out that I was not blaming Jeremy, for this is not his fault. Matthew pointed out I did, if I did I am sorry, but I believe I kept referring to this as Ben's fault, not Jeremy's. He is just told what to say and he says it.

Just wanted to clear that up.
