How do you get a community to be active? Do you find this valuable?

Your question is the key to a successful wiki and should be asked by everyone before they create a wiki. What on my wiki is going to make people want to join and participate? Is the subject matter unique? Are there other wikis providing the same subject with many members? Is the content on my wiki going to be fresh and changing? Is the content of my wiki something that people want to get involved with and want to share? These are some of the questions that needed to be answered on creation of your wiki.
Here are some ways to create more active community to your wiki.
1. GET YOUR SITE SEEN
Simple, yet effective steps can be taken to ensure that your site see's more visitors:

* Have an easy site name, and a solid site description

* The Promote my Wiki area is also a great place to go

* Invite friends. Chances are, they'll invite their friends with the same passion as you, and then they'll invite their friends, etc..

* Exchange links with simular sites. If you have a passion, others share it. It’s the essence of Wetpaint Wikis.

* Build better page names and descriptions.

* Link your own content. I mean internally link it. Once a new, interested person on your site see's one great page, chances are they are going to want to see similar pages. That's the beauty of linking

* Use social media tools like Facebook, Myspace, or Twitter to spread the word about your new site
http://www.facebook.com
--and/or--
http://www.myspace.com
--and/or--
http://www.twitter.com

*Get a good, easy to remember URL. If you have something like "csi.wetpaint.com" then it should be easy to remember. But if you have something like "csifansforever122.wetpaint.com" then you may want to try a custom url. Domains are getting cheaper, so start snagging!

Don't forget about tags. They are important in searches. Here is a good example of tags on a page. Not only are they tags but they are links also.

2. HAVE CONTENT ON YOUR WIKI THAT IS NOT STALE
* Make sure your content is changing all the time. This will invite people back to your wiki to see the changes and what is happening.
* Start interesting threads so people can supply their inputs and ideas.
* Run contests.
* Try not to compete with other wikis dealing with the same subject matter. Make your wiki to compliment the other wikis with unique content that cannot be found on the other wikis.
* Provide a place where members can show off their talents, their creativety, their experiences etc.
* Bottom line. MAKE YOUR WIKI INTERESTING so that it INVITES other's participation.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
