I absolutely, 100%, understand why people might be disappointed by the events of the last year. I've put about 3500 hours into my wiki, as well as many hundreds of dollars, so I was crushed. For me, I don't do this for fun, but rather as a public service, so if my wiki goes away, I've lost everything. (I've added the main wiki to my profile page, if you're curious.) I've looked hard, and I simply can't find any other wiki platform that is nearly as intuitively simple or as social as the Wetpaint platform. Believe me, I would leave if I could, but I can't.And the bottom line is that things are moving forward. Updates come excruciatingly slowly, but at least they come. The database sync problem seems to have been fixed, and the Updates tab is now working. Our wikis are still functioning, and as a community, we can continue to operate. My wiki is a huge part of my life (as I'm sure that your wikis are for you), and I'm grateful that I have the chance to work on it. I completely respect that some people may be mad at Wetpaint. Personally, I'm not, but I can 100% understand why others might be. Nonetheless, we are trying to build a community, here, so I believe it is important to keep things positive. If someone is angry about the pace of upgrades, and they post a message on the forum, then I think that that harms the community that we are trying to build. There was a time when we all needed to get our frustration out of our systems, but now, it just brings people down, and makes coming to WPC a downer. This hurts our community. For all of us who have put so much effort into our wikis and want them to grow and thrive in the future, our wikis depend on having a strong, positive, and vibrant community of wetpainters. > 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Why? Because anyone who get's really excited about my wiki may want to check out Wetpaint Central and see what other Wetpaint Wikis there are. If they see a thriving community, led by helpful, courteous, upbeat senior members, then they are more likely to want to contribute themselves and also more likely to want to check out other wikis and possibly join them. For example, when I Google search, I often add the keyword, "Wetpaint," so that I can find other Wetpaint communities that match up with my interests. I do that because I'm excited about Wetpaint and want to get more involved in our community. This is why I think that it is very important to keep things positive on the WPC forums. Sure, we might be frustrated. However, I know that many of us are in this for the long hall. We care deeply about the future of our Wetpaint Wikis, and keeping things positive on the WPC forums will be important for that. Speaking of keeping things positive, when people are excited about our community, they do wonderful things for the community. Thanks to amazing work by people like CryingDove, Jivanda, and MaxWilly, it is getting better every day (better organized, more tips, cleaner design). Likewise, I just noticed that CaptainSpaz and others have already updated the Golden Paintcan site for the 2011 awards. Their hard work is tremendously appreciated, and I'm very eager to see how the awards will go this year. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Speaking of the Golden Paintcan awards, I really liked CryingDove's idea of having a contest on Splats2, and I was just thinking that I might be willing to offer some sort of prize to go with the Golden Paintcant awards this year. I was thinking that perhaps we could vote for one of the Golden Paintcan awardees to be an overall winner. For that awardee, I could pay half of the fee to have ads removed for, say, three months.Winning the Golden Paintcan award in 2010 has been incredibly helpful for the The TMS Wiki, and I figure that this is just one way that I could give back (many many thanks to everyone who voted. You know who you are). We are all disappointed that the Wetpaint 100 has disappeared, but things like the Golden Paintcan awards, Splats2, and the wonderful community moderators here at WPC show that when Wetpaint steps back, the community can step forward. Do people think that this is a good idea? Do you think that it would add much to the contest? 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

For those who aren't yet familiar with the websites I mentioned, here are the web addresses:http://goldenpaintcanawards.wetpaint.com/ http://splats2.wetpaint.com/ I am not a creator, moderator, or admin of either, but am a huge fan of both. Check them out! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thanks for your great input, I'm glad that it's not just us moderators trying to keep the community calm about Wetpaint. They have every right to be frustrated, but perhaps another place is better to express your frustration than on a site where you need help. Why not 'You Are Kidding Right?' by CryingDove? That's the perfect wiki to let off steam about it.

"“…If someone is angry about the pace of upgrades, and they post a message on the forum, then I think that that harms the community that we are trying to build…”"__There have been requests, some lying around for more than 5 years (before I came to wetpaint) that have been ignored. These aren’t “whiney ‘I want it all’” requests, but urgent cries for basic needful things; That these were flat out ignored agitated people, but we were willing to ignore the itch until last year’s horrific mishandling of the server crash. __I do accept that Wetpaint can only do “so much,” especially vis-à-vis the “one hitter quitter” sites (such as one I found about 3 years ago or so that the owner opened up, created a horribly short home page, and hadn’t updated at that point in over 3 years), and that these are creating probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 95% of the problem (by overloading servers), but there are some things they could do, and haven’t. Dead sites have no activity, so they cannot create an overload situation. The problem that occurred last Sep-Oct. was created by an error message, that repeated logging itself until it used up the free disk space on a server. This caused a byproduct situation of whacking the servers out of sync. Eventually that all was corrected.Due to the unique structure of Wetpaint wikis, some features could not be implemented without a complete re-do of the entire platform. Features that have been removed, either were not used, or they were too difficult to maintain properly. New features will not be developed. So why complain about features that are not there or request features to be developed. This platform is what we have and we should learn to use it to its maximum. If the existing features are not satisfactory, then perhaps it is not the right venue to showcase your work. Do you find this valuable? |

Continuing on from what CryingDove said about 'features being too difficult to maintain properly...'I messaged Jeremy some time last year about Droplets. I wanted to use them, but they weren't working. He sent me a message back, after discovering that the external service they used to host the Droplets had stopped. He then removed them. Just an example. -Cameron Do you find this valuable? |

"Dead sites have no activity, so they cannot create an overload situation."__It’s the “too many drops in the bucket” problem; It’s not that any one site uses that much memory, because I’d wager any 100 combined probably don’t use enough to feel any real pain. __It’s the tens of thousands that pile up; Even if they only use “a couple hundred each” (bytes, that is), that’s a quarter million in very little time, doing nothing. (A few years ago I had to actually dump every piece of my material onto a flash drive because I had the same pictures a couple dozen times.) __By getting those sites that are just taking up space out, they would reduce this insurmountably. __And on that note, I’m putting at least some of the blame for this situation back onto Creators, Admins, and Mods; Every time someone adds a pic to a site, it takes up disk space. If everyone at “XYZ.wetpaint.com” re-uses the same pic, then it’s ok. But when everyone keeps adding the same pic, that “one” pic of say an Isræli IDF D9 pushing dirt off a hill, pushing right through a tree, apparently trying to bury about 4 people alive, goes from “39,000 bytes” to 39,000 MB’s. All for one site. __Creators, Admins, Mods- You need to police your sites. Keep tabs on what’s going on; One site in particular has the image I described over 100 times; And yet this site decided it was more profitable use of Moderator’s time to have them remove “adult” images from the site. ¿Seriously? It’s an ADULT site (that the members ACT like juveniles is not relevant). Ignoring these “spam” images, postings, etc while enforcing non-issue matters is killing WETPAINT- And it will eventually kill your sites as well. Do you find this valuable? |

If you have the same site photos on then the mods on that site aren't doing a very good job. Double up, or untitled photos should automatically be deleted off. The member who put the photos on should be sent a message to name them or be happy to have them deleted. There should be ordered albums that all the photos are put into.
