When will the bloodletting stop?
Mar 18 2011, 3:59 PM EDT | Post edited: Mar 18 2011, 3:59 PM EDT
I must say, recent developments at Wetpaint have gotten annoying and not inducive to very good service for user...especially those that spend $240 per year to have advertisement kept off our wiki. Is there any hope that there will be upgrades or are we to expect and continued decline in service? 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

You need to think about something: Nothing is perfect. That is the case here.

I wasn't here for a whole week, so I'm not sure what EXACTLY has been happening, but apparently forthe past week or longer, that Wetpaint had been experiencing problems updating and indexing. This week, Jeremy posted saying that they were going to run a scan that should fix it. Well, they did, and today (I'm guessing about the time.) when they did it, the scan erased the updates section, and started over. The problem seems to be fixed, because I've experienced no problems.
As far as upgrades go, it's been stated Wetpaint would be no longer adding new features to their wiki platform, but are not abandoning us. They are still giving us customer support, which the person in charge of Customer Support is Jeremy, and when we has a problem, they said they will still fix any problems.

For the last three days we have had the updates page cleared out. It just so happens to be the most important feature of the wiki (for obvious reasons). I am not disputing the integrity or skill of technicians and managers in charge of maintenance, but I do question the corporate support for a basic, well maintained service. Issues have been disruptive for many months, almost without letup. Nothing is perfect, but not everything should be so imperfect. Do you find this valuable?

Like I said, I have not been on in a while, so I have NO idea what's going on, except for what CryingDove told me. I have only experienced it gone yesterday and today. I'm sure it's part of the scan, and it's having to re-index it. I don't know because I do not work for Wetpaint, and I haven't been around for the past week or so. I am just guessing, so don't shoot me. I'm sure things will be straightened out next week. I have a kind-of connection with Wetpaint, because I talked to one of their staff members the other day who helps with the wiki-platform. I could ask her about what's going on and how long this will continue before it's fixed.

Gezza11: Not everything on Wetpaint is imperfect, nor did I say it was. If everything was imperfect, we wouldn't be able to do ANYTHING on Wetpaint, and all of our sites would be re-directing to another site. THAT would be everything being imperfect. Since that isn't going on, Wetpaint is not completely imperfect.

Naru its time things were more perfect than they have been since last October. All these glitches have be going on for too long and are happening too often.
I go to other sites and there are never any problems. I have been doing this now for nearly 3 years.

I understand what you are saying Bells, and I know what you're talking about, due to the fact I have been on Wetpaint for over 2 years. (Not as long as you, but still a long time.)
I agree they are happening too often, but there isn't really anything we can do about it, is there? We just have to wait for Wetpaint to fix the problems, like we always have.

Hyperbole is an important part of the English language - I did not infer that Wetpaint was totally imperfect - I am sure most readers understood what I meant. bellswebster undertood what I meant and expressed it eloquently.

Wait for Wetpaint to fix it's problems? Unless the corporate decision making changes, it will be a long wait indeed.

And that is where patience comes in! ;p

And I agree with Naru on this one. It is 100% better if we wait for Wetpaint to fix this problem.

Well, what else can we do? We can't fix the problems ourselves. We don't have access to any of the databases at Wetpaint. We just have to wait until every single bug and problem that pops up is fixed. Yeah, customer support is pretty slow, but at least we're getting a form of customer support. In every situation, there are always positives & negatives. Wetpaint is probably one of the better wiki hosts I've used. There are some good ones, but Wetpaint hits the top of the list, even with these persistent problems. The only thing that beats Wetpaint is creating your own website using coding language, which is extremely hard to learn and program correctly. I choose to stay with Wetpaint, even through all these bugs and issues. Do you find this valuable?

Well as long as wetpaint keep working on the problems which seems to be the issue here. We have already been told they aren't that interested in us anymore, so I feel, just my opinion, that they aren't in any hurry to do anything in particular. I mean its been 5 months or something since they started the new platforms and nothing has been right since. I do agree these are wonderfully set out wikis which makes it all the more frustrating that wetpaint can't see it. Lets see if these problems are fixed by the end of the week. I have read on other threads in this forum that Wetpaint is losing money with their wiki site. The business model isn't working. I have also been told that they are are working on a different business model, and while they are doing this, they are putting absolute minimum into Wetpaint wiki - to reduce the bleeding. That means (and I know how this works, as I have run large IT shops), very very slow repair of bugs etc, and some will simply not be fixed at all. This isn't just a case of bugs, though. We are talking about hardware, software, firmware going out of date and not being refreshed. We are talking about faults where there are 'workarounds' if it is at all possible. etc etc.

Sure thing, guys, wait.

I am already moving all my data to another site. Takes a while so I hope a catastrophe doesn't occur while I am in the process.

Gezza11: I am sad to hear you have no patience to wait for Wetpaint to sort things out.

We WILL wait because we actually HAVE patience, and are loyal to Wetpaint. People who don't do what we do, are just impatient and aren't really loyal to Wetpaint.

As far as I know, no one ever said Wetpaint was losing money from the wiki platform. I would love to see a thread that says exactly that.
Yes, they are working on another platform, known as the Entertainment Platform, which is found on wetpaint.com, but they are not ignoring us or disregarding our problems. They have fixed our problems before and during them doing the Entertainment Platform. They have not neglected us one bit, as far as I am concerned.

Wetpaint is not losing money on the wiki platform. There is not a single Wetpaint employee that has made that claim. This is all hyperbole coming from the community and their guessing as to why there has been problems and a lack of communication from Wetpaint. The CEO, Ben Elowitz has stated this platform is profitable but not enough to sustain a future for Wetpaint. That is why WP developed the Entertainment platform in hopes of thrusting WP into tomorrow. So far they seem to be doing real well with the Entertainment platform. Wetpaint has also stated they will continue to support and maintain the wiki platform but will not be developing new features for it.
If the information does not come from a Wetpaint Employee, then you must treat that information with some speculation as to it being factual or simply wanting to give an answer to pacify the reader.

My wiki Splats2 cannot be moved to another venue. It deals with only Wetpaint wikis and features and workarounds. So I will be here until the end.

I agree, the speculation should be treated carefully.

Lets work with facts then.

5+ months of database problems
nearly a week with lost update lists
today, I lost all discussions since January
extended sync problems between databases
do I need to say more.

Personally, don't care about the speculation. I care about basic service.

I think Walrus, Naru, and CD said it best... And Bells too...

I am actually going to be loyal to Wetpaint and patiently wait for them to fix all of the problems, even if it does take YEARS. Why? Because I'm actually patient.

Besides, the Updates page isn't very important IMO.

BatFan, for some sites, especially Role Playing sites, the Updates section is important. It helps to see who's online, and also helps you to check if anyone is asking for help. It is very useful here on Wetpaint Central.

Honestly my opinion probably doesn't mean much here considering my rage quit many months ago, I've been going through threads all day and I can't defend Wetpaint anymore. I didn't have many problems with Wetpaint up to 2010, bugs galore, many of my friends left, a number of sites fell victim to inactivity, I felt like I was overlooked, etc. Many problems that a normal Wetpaint user faced everyday, that get reported and given the same be patient response, the same response I'm ashamed to have given during my time as a Community Moderator.

You can be patient forever in a sense, but almost a year of constant bugs members are within reason to worry about the status of Wetpaint. Why should some members be patient any longer? I hardly see the value, Community Moderators have assured us that no new features are coming, the constant problems Wetpaint has will be fixed, but be replaced by new ones, its hard to see why anyone would stick around. Fact of the matter is people who have put money into their site have a hard time leaving them, when you put money into something you never want it to go away, and for others it is out of pear loyalty to Wetpaint. While money and loyalty are great, why are they getting less then those who came and went? With no new features and constant bugs, it won't be long before the Wetpaint wiki platform becomes to primitive and other sites will offer up much more to those who wish to create. In the end you can be that kid in gym class who will take whoever picks him, or you can be the captain and make your own choices.

No offense because 3 of those members are my friends (sorry Bells don't really know you, but I see you around here a lot.) but they are basically telling us to wait for nothing. Wetpaint will get it fixed eventually, I understand these things take time, but for some of us these sites are very important and the attitude of it will get fixed sometime this month doesn't sit well with me. I understand the whole Entertainment platform from a business standpoint, but the wikis are still here and they've been given the shaft and the members who have lost patients have every right to.

Suppose in a hypothetical sense a simple bug took months to fix, how patient would you be, especially if this bug was effecting something extremely important to your site? If you could be patient for months knowing your site is being harmed and Wetpaint is giving half their effort to fix it, you sir would be the most patient man/women in the world.

The updates page is extremely important to many sites, Wetpaint Central for example uses the updates section to see which new problems and concerns have been brought up and need to be answered. Role Playing sites have a number of different role plays going on at once that the updates section is used to determine which of the role plays you are part of have been posted in recently. Sites like open wikis that anyone can edit rely on the updates page to tell them which pages have been updated so they can check to make sure the information is accurate.
