Eh. A debate.

Well.. I want to discuss wikis basically, but in a bit of more depth. My question is do you see wetpaint wikis still up and maintainted in the year 2015? In the last year, I've grown more and more worried on how much work I should put into my website due to the rumors that wetpaint is closing down.... and the wetpaint update.

I understand that there isn't any plans on updating or enhancing the wikis as of now and I know promises can't be made to support what I actually want to know.. though as admins or community moderators do you see it happening?

A lot of work has been put into several wikis and it'd be a shame to let the really good ones.... or even the small communties suffer and fall after years of work.

If wikis won't last til at least 2015, do you ever see it possible for wetpaint to allow several wiki owners buy their wiki? You must be asking.. "buy ur own wiki?...." .. I mean it in.. even if wikis do perish one day, is it possible with credit cards we could pay for them to remain open on some new domain even if wetpaint closes down/wikis close down? I'm not really sure on how else to phrase it, so sorry if I stated that in a confusing way.

What's in the future.... ?

Back-up your site regularly:
http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Site+backup
So that you will be able to use your "hard work" somewhere else...

Create a database of contacts...
* by asking private mail addresses
* by inviting members to add you as friend on other social sites, like facebook, myspace, etc.

Who knows what wonderful options we will have in 2015?
besides Wetpaint.... ?

I don't think you understand as much as I'd hope. I can use facebook, myspace, etc. Though that won't change the work I put into my website, since 2008. Why would I want to discuss it on facebook.. if I built my site for that reason?

Sorry, that just isn't good enough. If wikis were to shut down, then I'd be angered.. others would be too. Is it fair that hardwork.. and I'm not just saying hardwork. I mean hours and hours of work should be shut down without fair warning? And without a way to move everything IN the site somewhere else.. or to a new domain?

Plus that site backup. Not too sure on what to do there.

I just think if wikis were to close, shouldn't we get like three month warning?

When you back up your site... you saved your work.
So you will be able to use it on any other platform in future.

When you created that prospective new site on another platform, you can invite all your members who connected with you on myspace and facebook via those platforms, to join your new site... Or via direct mail, if you have a database with private mail addresses of your current members.

But ... who says Wetpaint is going to close down anyway?

Hope, with this information, you will understand my suggestions.

LOL

I've worried about this a lot in the past, but I'm not worried so much about it now. Wetpaint seems to be committed to keeping the Wikis by Wetpaint unit going (even if it doesn't add new features), and who can blame them? It's a profitable business unit, and it increases their revenue and influence.

That being said, I think that it makes sense to be cautious. For that reason, I back up my site regularly. The most valuable thing in the wiki is the content on the wiki pages, and if the worst happens, I would move that content over to a different wiki hosting company. The new company's software won't be nearly as good as Wetpaint's (I really love the integration of the social and forum components with the wiki), so I hope it never happens, but I think that it is good to be prepared.

I'm even eventually moving my site to a custom domain name, so that if the worst happens, moving to a new host wouldn't be so hard. It only costs about $10 per year to come up with your own domain (for example, tmswiki.org rather than tmswiki.wetpaint.com), so it seems like it's worthwhile (you do need to have a credit card or know someone who has one and is willing to do it in their name).

For anyone interested in backing up their wiki, you should really check out, CryingDove's new pages on Splats2 about an alternative method for backing up your sites. The pages are still under construction, but if you want to back up all of your wiki content, they give you a wonderful second option.

Here's the link:

Very helpful. Thank you to CryingDove.
