Question for all moderators
Feb 19 2011, 8:53 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 19 2011, 8:53 PM EST
Ive noticed that moderators seem to know everything about anything on this site. So i was wondering, do you get told this information once you become a moderator? or did you just gradually learn it over time? Do you find this valuable?

I'm not a moderator, but the moderators got chosen to be mods because of the information they knew + how trusting they were. If you don't know much information about wetpaint, you won't get a free ride haha! I'm just a writer so I'm not a moderator, but I can ensure you if you want t be a mod you need to be active, trustworthy, and know your stuff!

exactly what counts as contributions? because i talked to a moderator who said that if i want to be a writer, i need to have at least triple digit contributions, but im not sure what counts as contributions.

Well.. each post = 1 contribution. Though It'd be a better idea to help people out in need then posting random stuff to just get your post count up. Quality and is just as Important as Quanity! You can also edit your profile, though that isn't really helping anyone lol.

Just post on threads when someone needs help by posting accurate information and you'll be shocked at the results.

Your welcome btw!

Steps that makes a good moderator and how to become one.

1. Forget about the title of moderator. That means one is seeking the title and the title only.
2. Become a great community member first. This means you care about answering questions other members have or giving a solution to a problem that may be experiencing. Assisting someone with correct and exact information is most important to you and will be to the member seeking advice. This builds a reputation for you and others will notice.
3. It is imperative that one can not only read and understand what is being asked or presented in the threads. Your guidance will be based upon your comprehension. If you do not understand or if the post is hard to understand, ask for clarification or more information from the poster.
4. Do not guess. That is the worst thing that can be done. If you do not know the answer, do not reply until you do. Giving a guess will only accomplish one thing.....confusion.
5. You do not need to know all the answers. You do need to know where to find them. Knowing the FAQs of Wetpaint Central is required. Most moderators know the FAQs backwards and forwards. They know this is where most answers will be found.
6. There is nothing wrong with not answering a post if you do not know the correct answer. The post will be answered eventually.
7. Do not engage in chatting in a post. You can be cordial in your replies, but allow your posts to contribute to the solution of the originators post.

Reply 5 continued

8. The rewards of contributing is not measured by a contribution count, but by knowing your answer helped someone get through their problems with their wiki or your answer has satisfied them. This normally can be seen with a final reply from the originator saying "Thank You, you have been a great help"
9. Read the posts often. Even those that have been answered. This will be the start of your knowlegebase into the common problems members face.
10. You must meet every challenge with an attitude. That attitude is " I am going to try to help someone. I know that they do not know and perhaps I do, or I know where the answer lies. I will be patient with the member no matter what. And if someone else provides the answer before me, I am going to feel as good though, as if I answered it first. It is all about helping and that is the bottom line"

Very seldom to I talk about me. Mostly it is about Splats2. But it may be appropriate here.

As a community member with an extended privilege of uploading screenshots when there is a problem to assist Wetpaint, I do a lot of moderating without the title of Moderator. To me, the title means nothing. That is why I gave it up twice during my association with Wetpaint Central.

I used the capabilities that came with the position to do moderation. And when that was done, I asked to be demoted.

2500 irrelevant photos were removed from the photo gallery. When they were deleted, I had nothing more to do with the title, so I relinquished it.

Over 3000 non-meaningful threads were deleted when I was promoted to a temp mod.

And just the other day, 1500 threads were visited and 400 threads were deleted. And threads were moved from one category to the appropriate category where they belongedt. This was done as a temp mod and when the task was completed, the moderator priveleges were removed.

These tasks did not up my contribution count one bit. Did the community see the work that was beng performed? No. Making this site comfortable for members is what it is all about. Doing everything possible to help the community members by assuring they will have a great time with their wikis. That is true moderating, with or without a title.

Bottom line is you can help the community in so many ways without a title.

Yes, you are right there CD..its just being able to have the right tools that only go with being a mod that I find frustrating. You want to add a page of something, or delete a wrongful photo and you can't. Do you find this valuable?

The man seemed frustrated with how to go about his fanfic..he just couldn't understand it....he "dobbed" on me and I got into trouble for trying to help!...got told it was nice to offer but it was a mods place!..scheeze.. Often, CD asks me to remove things for him, like irrelevant threads and such. Just the other day, I went through the 'Make a Suggestion' category, and deleted every single locked and irrelevant thread. Do you find this valuable?

CD is a great write, no doubt.

Eh...people shouldn't only help others because they want to be a moderator. Seriously, being a moderator is EASY. All you need to do is stay on WPC for a few months and answer questions. Becoming a helpful and popular member is harder and more important.
