Suggestion - "Who's Online" Concept Art

I've seen the commonly suggested feature, "Who's Online", and added a workaround for it on Splats2. But the workaround isn't good enough, so I thought I'd just post some concept art for Wetpaint, even though you will completely ignore it, like every other suggestion. The idea is that it replaces the 'Other Widget' option on profiles. Here it is:

This is actually probably the feature I would most crave right now. It would be very useful and interesting to know who's online at any given moment or not, both to decide whether or not to try to contact a specific person at a given time, and to have an idea of who and how many people are actually on your site at any given time besides the people directly contributing. All the lurkers would be blown out of the water, but it sure would be good to know they're there. It would be probably be important to allow each individual person to hide their presence anyway, if they wanted, though. Privacy is important. But, yeah, I'm not getting my hopes up for this or anything else new, really. Good visual concept art, though, Maxwilly. Do you find this valuable? |

I can tell who is on line just by looking at the updates.

"I can tell who is on line just by looking at the updates."Yes, but that's not very handy if someone is online, but isn't making any contributions. Do you find this valuable? |

But then no one would have any privacy, eh?

"I know. And like Losa said, privacy could be an option."But also if you don`t want people to know that you online then their may be somewhere on it they gives you a way to be official not online. Do you find this valuable? |

Lol, but this would just humiliate all the unpopular sites. While WCC2 has 200 users online, site XXXX only has 1 person online.

Well there would probably be an "hide" option to show you are offline, or something like that. Do you find this valuable? |

"Lol, but this would just humiliate all the unpopular sites. While WCC2 has 200 users online, site XXXX only has 1 person online."Well, that would give you just as much humiliation as seeing '14,000 Members' on WCC2 and '4 Members' on site XXXX. Do you find this valuable? |

"Well, that would give you just as much humiliation as seeing '14,000 Members' on WCC2 and '4 Members' on site XXXX."Heh... well... not exactly. My very first site on Wetpaint (about the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles tv show) still has over 12.000 registered members, but only less than 20 or so ever go there anymore. But yeah, I know what you mean. By reading other comments here, I feel I should stress again that I already said on my first post on this thread that an option to always stay hidden or private should definitely be included, even though it would probably be better if it was not by default, but rather an explicit choice. Well, this "Who's Online" feature would make Wetpaint too much like a forum, which isn't what Wetpaint is.

"Well, this "Who's Online" feature would make Wetpaint too much like a forum, which isn't what Wetpaint is."Then why do all wikis have a "discussion forum" or "discussions" section and it's usually the most active and sought after section of the sites? Aren't we on a forum right now as we post? Wetpaint is not just a forum, sure, but the forums are a huge part of it, that's for sure. You're not making too much sense here... You're probably just teasing us all, I know. Do you find this valuable? |

You're all WPC mods and I'm just a little anonymous. Wetpaint wikis are supposed to be wikis, no forums. The "Discussion forum" is just a small section in Wetpaint wikis. If there is actually going to be a "Who's Online" feature, it should only feature those users who are browsing the Discussions Forum section. Sorry for not making too much sense. The discussion of privacy is simply answered by the fact the online/offline condition has to be controlled by the individual user. This means is has to be a manual option, not an automatic one. And since Wetpaint is not developing any new features, the idea has to come from the community. So far I know of only two people working in this area. Maxwilly and myself. Please look at this wiki and offer up ideas on how to better make it work. No matter what site you may go to. Yahoo, Google or others that offer a who's online option, you will have to join and launch their program. Who And Where wiki is designed around that same idea with one exception. It is designed for Wetpaint wikis. Take a look at it and try it out. http://whoandwhere.wetpaint.com/ Do you find this valuable? |

You're all WPC mods and I'm just a little anonymous.Ok, so we'll have to agree to disagree on how big or important the discussion forums are on Wetpaint sites. I've been a long time member of several of them and I can tell you that the discussion forum is most definitely the main reason why the huge majority of the people there go to the sites. My opinion is that the forums are of huge importance on Wetpaint. I also didn't genuinely mean to offend you or anything. I have just re-read my last post and I realize now it may have sounded a little too harsh, maybe, for those who don't know me, but I really didn't mean that. Sorry. Oh, and I'm not a Wetpaint Central mod, even though I am on other sites. Do you find this valuable? |

"The discussion of privacy is simply answered by the fact the online/offline condition has to be controlled by the individual user. Personally, I would have no problem to let people know I'm online even when I'm not directly contributing, and I'm sure many, many others wouldn't have any problem either. In fact, I would even *want* people to know. Do you find this valuable? |

"Well, if you have Google Talk, I did make my own Workaround on Splats2.You guys are the real whizzes! The stuff on that page sounds rather complicated to do, but it sure took work from the people who came up with it. Personally, I don't have Google talk and I'm not too familiar with attachments, but good to know! Thanks, Cameron! Do you find this valuable? |
