I am DISGUSTED with wetpaint.
Dec 15 2010, 4:17 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 15 2010, 4:17 PM EST
Dear wetpaint staff,

My name is McGriggen, I am a child psychologist who specialises in resolving eating disorders in Edinburgh. (My NHS credentials are available, should you wish to request them via email)

I am writing publicly to display my ABHORATION and utter disgust at your tolerance of a site belonging to you.

Whilst doing my research I came across a website on google entitled, "The Fat Girl's Guide."

What I read over the next half hour was disgusting, horrifying and intolerable!
The site is illegal under several UK laws. What is being discussed is illegal under international laws. If you do not see fit to remove the site then I will be forced to report it to website monitoring standards.

The website's address is "pro-ana-angels," ana here refers to anorexia, a mental disease linked to the visual implications of ones bodily image. Hundreds of girls struggle with this disease every year! It is revolting!

The site is using subliminal wording to subvert and twist the truth and reality of this disease. "Fat people contribute to global warming." This is, forgive my language, utter ********. Each and every one of you ought to be ashamed.

The website teaches girls how to throw up, how to avoid food.

Need I link some of what I have seen?

http://pro-ana-angels.wetpaint.com/page/Thinspiring+Pictures

http://pro-ana-angels.wetpaint.com/page/3+Day+Diet

The 3 Day Diet has the potential to give rickets, and in prolonged use kill!

Please respond to me within 24 hours or I shall be contacting several organisations.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Thatcher McGriggen

Errr... Upon entering that site there's actually a disclaimer clearly stating:

"Warning!
This web site may contain content that is inappropriate for viewers under the age of 18.
Wetpaint does not control and is not responsible for the content of this site."

Exactly what Losa78 said. Wetpaint only applies to U.S. laws, since this is where they are based.

You wasted time writing a long paragraph for no reason.

I agree with Losa and Justin.
Perhaps taking time to look at the homepage and read over it, seeing what it talks about, major content, sick pictures, etc. instead of just zooming over to a random page without reading such information, and not thinking clearly then coming to rant about how you are disgusted with us.
That's what I would have done.

Best. Comment. Ever.
That is probably the best thing I've read all day. :D

And because of the disclaimer, Dr., no one can be arrested or shut down by "organizations".

It doesn't really matter what the front page or the back page says. If it has offensive material and dangerous instructions on how to do things then this should be addressed. The below message on the site does not justify the contents. Wetpaint have rules for their wikis..porn sites and this type of site should not be allowed to be started in the first place.

If I'm not mistaken, on a recent thread, it was said that Wetpaint wikis are aloud to have adult content as long as they have a disclaimer. But I think we need a Wetpaint staff to clarify.

Amen to that, too, and what Bells said. McGriggen, you should /keep in mind/ what we said. It might help you when you come across future sites similar to that.

Guys, the rules are, People ARE allowed to put adult content on their site as long as there is a disclaimer. Adult Content is allowed on any websites, given permission. Wetpaint allows this permission.

Andering, that was slightly rude.
Same goes for you Justin, 'You wasted time writing a long paragraph for no reason', wasn't really necessary.

I'd say that the creator of this thread had every right to create it. If they believe in the health of children, then they are indeed allowed to state their opinions, given it is in an orderly manner and involves Wetpaint.

However, Wetpaint's Terms of Service do indicate that they are not responsible for content of a wiki. This is under Section 3 ("Submissions").

It states on Section 3:
You understand and agree that all postings, comments, edits, feedback, suggestions, ideas, photographs, images, notes, drawings, concepts, and other information, content, or materials posted on, transmitted through, or linked from the Site, either online or offline and whether or not solicited by the Site (collectively, "Submissions"), are the sole responsibility of the person from whom such Submissions originated.

So, I believe that the Creator of this thread should address his issues to the User on this website who Created the content.

Another thing, 'Wetpaint only applies to U.S. laws, since this is where they are based' is correct. I am from the UK myself, and I believe I am right in thinking that only US laws apply to Wetpaint.
Section 14 of the Terms of Service:
Choice of Law and Forum: By visiting the Site, you agree that the laws of the State of Washington and U.S. law, without regard to principles of conflict of laws, will govern this Agreement.

Thatcher_McGriggen, I believe you should read the terms of service very carefully before posting claims to have certain content removed from a site.

Guys, it only takes one reply to answer this question. Losa provided a perfectly accurate answer to this question. Lately, I've noticed a lot of the people helping out, including the moderators, like replying to threads that have already been answered. Not only were the rude repliesun-called for an in-necessary, but the replies after Losa's were not required either. Quite honestly, all the posts on this thread are practicially saying the same thing. If the question has been answered completely, common sense tells you not to reply. I know everyone likes to rack up the contributions, but when helping out, get valuable contributions rather than junk contributions like these. If you guys have any concerns with this, message me back.

Dr McGriggen,
Thanks for taking the time to voice your concerns. There is content on the Wetpaint network which some people may not like, but we do not consider ourselves the arbiters of what speech is worthy and what speech is not. We will however, act in accordance with the law. In this case, we do not have reason to believe that the unorthodox opinions that the site's users hold are illegal. We consider this a free speech issue and will not be party to censorship, even if we dislike or disagree with what is being said.

Excuse me young person...Please do not assume I am only on this site to "rack up" conributions thank you very much!. And why can't others have a say about things. Losa78's reply said nothing really. I personally was sticking up for the Dr. after he was being so rudely treated. So you think my posts are just junk do you! It will be Jeremy I contact about your reply!

I wouldn't mess with Matt. I've heard a few complaints about him before, but even if he is a little strict sometimes, he gets the job done. And pretty well.

I'm not in it to rack up contributions either, I just want to make things simple and easy for the users. And I wouldn't class these things as 'Junk Contributions', but I'll just go with Matt's post.

I also think I'll lock this thread again, as Jeremy has taken the issue into his own hands.
