Search not giving results
Dec 6 2010, 12:15 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 6 2010, 12:15 PM EST
The wiki in question is: alktech.wetpaint.com

I'm guessing my wiki hasn't been indexed recently or needs to be re-indexed. A page titled "Film collection DVDs" was created on Nov. 11 (http://alktech.wetpaint.com/page/Film+collection+DVDs), with a link on this page (http://alktech.wetpaint.com/page/DVD%2FVHS) and included "film collection" as part of the keywords.

But when I search for "film collection" (without quotes) I get this:http://alktech.wetpaint.com/search/everything/film%20collection?contains=film%20collection

Nothing showing that page from Nov. 11. Any help would be appreciated, as our department does use this for work and we rely heavily on the search function. I don't know what else might not be showing up. I realize there's usually a short delay between creating a page and it displaying in search, but 3+ weeks is unacceptable.

For some reason, a lot of Sites haven't had the search working properly. If you message Jeremy_Wetpaint or email him at info@wetpaint.com, you can get him to re-index your site for you. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Thanks! I hadn't been able to find a way to contact a person for re-indexing, so having actual contact info is great! Do you find this valuable?

Go to the top of this page and select MEMBERS and select MODERATORS. There will be a page that will appear with all the moderators and admins to this wiki. From that small list, you will see jeremy_wetpaint. Click on the name and select SEND MESSAGE. Explain in the message that you would like to have your wiki re-indexed.

Is this the same for photos? You put in an album name and it tells you there isn't one there by that name but you know there is one. Do you find this valuable?

I just want to add that for me, the search feature on the wikis is by far one of it's worst and less dependable features. Only very, very rarely do I find what I'm looking for, no matter how much I refine the search, and indeed it usually misses the most obvious results imaginable. As far as the discussion forum is concerned, it's "easier" to find words randomly written on posts than words written on thread titles (!)... How weird is that... =_=
If you want to heavily rely on this feature for whatever reason, you're pretty much screwed. Pardon my French.

Wetpaint's site search feature has always been a problematic area for Wetpaint and the wikis. So the best thing to do to search a site is to use Google's search engine. Keep in mind your wiki has to be indexed through Google.

Here is how to get the best results returned on a search of your site: Use this format to search

SITE:WETPAINTCENTRAL.COM ANCHOR LINKS

SITE: = the syntax for the site search
WETPAINTCENTRAL.COM = the site to search
ANCHOR LINKS = the word or phrase to search for.

Some examples of searching with this syntax and try to answer the questions in this post.

1. lorisuth, the Algonquin Library will not be able to use this method until your wiki is indexed by Google. I cannot find your wiki on Google.
2. bellswebster - to search for a photo or a photo album use this syntax in the google search window.
allintext:"help photos" wetpaintcentral

This will return the album in the photo gallery of WPC named help photos.

allintext:"access profile" wetpaintcentral
This will bring up the photo "access profile" in the photo album "help photos" in the photo gallery of WPC.

3. Losa78 - You are absolutely correct.. Try using Google's search with the syntax shown here. You will find it brings forth more results.

Yeah, I use Google all the time for searches on the wikis already. Indeed much better than the internal wiki engines, as weird as it may be. Thanks for your tips!

You could also put a Custom Search widget on your site, and set it to only search your URL.

That is correct, if one wants to pay for the custom search. Excerpt from Google

"Google Site Search has simplified the pricing structure and doubled on-demand indexing quotas"

FREE is always good....

I tried that, but it's JavaScript, so not supported by Wetpaint.

If you click on the link in reply 6, it will bring up a page on SPLATS2, that has a site search widget written in JavaScript and placed on a WP wiki page. Spend a little time on Splats2 and learn how to put HTML..CSS and JS code onto a WP wiki. Easy, after the technique is learned.
