Inviting New Members
Nov 12 2010, 9:54 PM EST | Post edited: Nov 12 2010, 9:54 PM EST
H

I am using Firefox 3.6.12 and I run a private wiki. I have had to soften security if I want to invite others to join, and this is, despite the hassle, worked. Not so after last few days - I send invite, there are no CATCHUP dialogue boxes and... both recipients have received nothing to day.

what's going on?

The Invite Feature for Private wikis was dropped several months ago. To invite others to join your site, you need to give them the site URL. Once they have the URL, you need to unlock the site by changing it from a private wiki to a public wiki. Give the two members an ample amount of time to join. Once they've joined, feel free to lock the wiki. Locking the wiki refers to the process of making the site private again. Do you find this valuable?

perhaps it would have helped to remove the invite function if it is redundant Do you find this valuable?

Well, the Invite Feature for Public sites works, but they dropped support of the Private wiki invite feature many months ago. When the site is private, you can send invites and your friends will receive them. I do believe, however, if a site is set to private mode, there is no invite settings to access. nope. We have had this site private for well over a year and the invite settings have always existed, and in fact were successfully used a long time ago. Over recent months I have changed permission settings to allow public access and successfully sent invites.

I return to my original statement - why isn't the invite working?

They got rid of it, but I don't know why. Perhaps because if members invited people to a private wiki that weren't supposed to come in, it wasn't very private?

Personally, I would only invite those who I want to be part of my private site. doh.
Anyway, i made it public and the people I wanted to join succeeded in getting in. This system is complete rubbish. I should be able to invite someone into an private wiki, and I certainly am not interested in a function (invite) that is completely redundant.

Here's an example of why they removed the feature for Private Sites:
Okay, take for instance a Private Site is made for people who are for abortions, but an ad for Diapers appears on the site. Kinda ruins the point of the site, right?
It was mainly because the people who make the ad(s) were not sure how much traffic their ads were getting on Private Sites, so they couldn't get paid correctly.

Understand the philosophy but it is executed to dismal failure.
1. I still can have a private wiki, and I get ads (by turning public, get 'invitees' to go to the url, join, and then I turn back to private).
2. I still get click points and buttons saying I can invite people when I CAN'T (i.e. a redundant feature).

This isn't a rant at other posters in this thread - but it sure is at those responsible for the usability and user interface.

As you can read above, that is exactly what I do. My observations on poor user interface still stands. Do you find this valuable?
