Dealing with Spammers
Nov 6 2010, 11:00 AM EDT | Post edited: Nov 6 2010, 11:00 AM EDT
I am set to only allow people who register to write and someone is continually registering new accounts and posting spam on it day and night (under their personal pages) Each day I ban the idiot's new pages; I have also asked them to stop; but nothing stops them.

I either need to have them banned by IP address (but there is no Complete History under their page) or I need the ability to authorize who can in fact register to be a writer (and then authorize individuals who are legit - and ban them if they abuse their privaledges.)

What can be done to stop this nonsense? It is occuring in the ANTS wiki (http://ants.wetpaint.com/) under Members.

It's a common problem.
Wetpaint is looking into it...
might have something to do with the Captcha not working...

____The reality is there will ALWAYS be somebody who WILL spam everyone they can. My brothers site gets 200+ spam members per day, WITH the restrictions that have been called for, and it hasn’t even slowed them down (it’s only put their “offerings” where non-moderators, etc, can’t see them).
____Here’s EXACTLY what I wrote at one point:
____“RE: Spam. There are a lot of people out there that think they can spam this site. They’re wrong. Every thread must first be reviewed; Until then, it’s hidden. That means spammers can’t access the site. PERIOD. It is fairly annoying to have a few THOSUAND (yes, that’s four or more zeros) posts to weed through, when none of them are going up. Period. If your purpose here is to sell prescriptions or adult related entertainment, GO AWAY NOW. If you’re hear to recruit people to other websites, probably best to go away now (unless you already have an agreement of reciprocity with Godd, in which case he’s already approved you anyways). And for those of you dazed and confused by all this, terribly sorry, just stupid people do stupid things and then I have to be bad Andering. Please ignore all this unpleasantness and have round on me.”
____<?>What has he real effect been? I think it’s provoked them, actually; We went from a few dozen a day to a few HUNDRED an hour. None of them get seen in public.
____In the end, there’s nothing that Wetpaint can do. Marc’s site has catchpas, these people are paid a few cents per second to manually type them in. Postings are hidden until approved or deleted, they do it anyways. New e-mail addresses are required to sign up, they simply move a period around in their e-mail addy and get registered anyways.
____Theonly thing you can do is effectively police your site; Deleting offensive posts, banning (actual) troublemakers, and if necessary hire more moderators.

You can ask Jeremy for a IP Bans by sending him a message, along with the user names you have found.
Also, they can write on their profile without being a Writer. If you want this to stop, I would suggest making the site Private until they go away. To do so, go to Settings>Permissions>Members Only
