Abuse of our academic site, please help!
Nov 3 2010, 5:31 PM EDT | Post edited: Nov 3 2010, 5:31 PM EDT
Dear Sirs,
Our serious academic site, http://wikicivilcode.wetpaint.com/, is continuously used to post advertisements. We have already banned upwards of 120 intrusive spammers who sign up only to leave content that is either inappropriate or commercial in nature. We are an organization of law professors, we are paying for an advertisement-free platform. I have received several messages about this issue with promises that you will incorporate change to avoid this glitch and misuse of our platform, but it still occurs.
Would you please make membership to our site by invitation only, that way, no one that we don't approve of will be able to post content.
Please let me know at what telephone number I may call about this issue.
Sincerely,
J. J.

You can make it Private by going to Settings>Permissions>Private (FYI: To let others join, you will have to make it Public, let them join, then make it Private again.)

Btw, Wetpaint is aware of these spammers and is doing their best to get rid of them.

I blocked a few of the IP addresses that those accounts are coming from, which should help. How many new spam accounts are you seeing added on your site per day (on average)? Do you find this valuable?

Just blocked three new supposed "members" who posted inappropriate content to our academic site. We get between three and six new postings a day. Over a month ago, I received an e-mail from WetPaint indicating that you were incorporating some type of improvement. Please include some option that will permit us to keep our site open, but screen new members before they join.
This situation is unreasonable. By the time we can block people, our site has become a billboard for inappropriate advertisements. We pay for an advertisement free wiki platform.

The only sure fire way to prevent spammers from visiting your site and creating new accounts would be to make your site private. 3-6 new accounts per day sounds like a fairly manageable number. Bringing the level of spam to a manageable level was the goal of the changes that we made recently (see http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/CAPTCHA+information ). Prior to the changes, some sites were regularly seeing 100-500 new spam accounts created (by bots) while they were sleeping. That's a reduction of over 10X.

Here's a link that works:
http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/CAPTCHA+information

btw... does it still work? ... the captcha?
or is there something wrong with it... after the recent tech issues...?
Because for a couple of weeks we did not have the bogus accounts / spammers and since the tech issues it started again...

Dear Sir,
don't appreciate your minimizing the impact and the expands in terms of time and reputation that this problem with the platform is causing. Beg to differ with your assessment that having to block 3 to 6 new accounts per day is manageable. We all have different time constraints, as I'm sure you will allow.

Since this service is not free of charge, but we are paying for an advertisement-free platform, may I request respectfully that you incorporate an innovation that will permit us to approve or disapprove of new members.

We resist making the site private as you suggest, because the entire purpose of the technology, wikis, is to allow people to cooperate. However, we could screen people before we accept them as members. That would solve our problem. Would you please look into this, rather than simply dismiss our problem.

With all good wishes,

I think you are on to something. It looks like there might be a problem with the CAPTCHA functionality. We'll look into this right away.

I had messaged Kevin about something along that line this morning, while at school. I figured something must have been messed up with it. Either that, or use another captcha.

Wetpaint is not dismissing your problem at all. You mis-understood, so don't blame Jeremy for trying to do something he is not.
and You can make that suggestion of yours here: http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Make+a+Suggestion
