Wetpaint in "read-only" mode: OR Why isn't Wetpaint working?
Oct 21 2010, 1:13 PM EDT
I just posted this on the homepage, but am re-posting it here for anyone wondering why things aren't workingWetpaint is currently experiencing technical difficulties due to problems with some of our database slaves (copies of the master database). In order to prevent a cascade of additional database corruption we are temporarily putting all Wetpaint sites into a "read-only" mode in a few minutes. While we are fixing the problem it will not be possible to edit pages or post threads. Thanks for your patience while we get these problems resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and will do our best to have things up and running normally as fast as possible. Do you find this valuable? |

"I just posted this on the homepage, but am re-posting it here for anyone wondering why things aren't workingWe're holding off on switching things to "read-only" mode for a bit longer, so you should be able to continue to edit pages and post in the forums. However, we are still having some database problems, so you will likely see issues where recent contributions seem to disappear. They aren't gone, it's just that you are likely seeing content that is served up from one of the databases that isn't fully up to date. Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for keeping us posted, Jeremy.Still, only in the last two months, we've had: - Wikis not even clickable at all; - Inability to sign in and wikis on read only mode for hours; - The current problem mentioned here (which is really, really annoying, btw); - Threads not updating or bumping on the discussion forum list at all, as well as being unmovable, undeletable, unlockable and impossible to feature on unfeature; - The number of contributions count for some members freezing and never counting anymore again; - Private messages being received only hours or even days after they're sent; - Administrators and creators editing other people's profiles and ending up having the changes made saved to overwrite their own profile pages. And these are only the few bugs I can remember right now. They've been way more in two months than I had ever seen in two years before. However, with all due respect, Wetpaint's stance on all this is still that this is all very normal and current on all websites all over the Internet... I'm sorry but I'm not buying it anymore. I think Wetpaint needs to have the guts to come out and admit that at least most of this is happening because they have changed business direction, they've made significant staff cuts and they just don't care about the wikis anymore. It's not credible at all that they're still maintaining the wikis as they used to. There's been way too many problems for that to be true. Many people at my sites are already saying they can't take all these bugs anymore and they're already discussing where they should move to instead. It's sad, but at least Wetpaint could come clean and own up to their decisions. And clearly say it's only a matter of time until the wikis are dropped altogether. 7 out of 7 found this valuable. also the update page has been having problems, sometimes it shows that no activity on the site has happened since wednesday and then if you refresh the page it shows all the activity that has happened as well as sometimes newer edits don't show up, newer post don't show up, new threads don't show up, and newer members don't show up unless you refresh the page a few times, it's as if nothing exist if it happened later than wednesday unless you maneuver around it, witch sometimes is more difficult than just refreshing the page.

Losa78, when you can name a perfect website producer, you let me know. I have to say, Wetpaint is the best free-website maker on the Internet. There are others out there, but none compare to Wetpaint. FreeWebs has very few editing options, plus their discussion forum is no where near as complex as the Wetpaint Discussion Forum. Wetpaint has many more site building options than ANY other free website maker on the Internet. Bugs will come and go, you see. However, I've talked to Jeremy many times about these bugs. They're working their hardest to repair them, but every repair is not permanent. However, once they find the permanent repair, Wetpaint will go on and run smoothly. I don't think you have any right to claim that without hardcore evidence to back it up. Yes, there have been A LOT of bugs lately. At one point or another, every site goes through a time with bug after bug bombarding them. All we can do is wait and trust that Wetpaint is doing an honest job to fix them. Maybe you've lost your trust in Wetpaint, but that doesn't mean everyone else has. Wetpaint is pulling no act, I assure you. Just because they support the new Fansite platforms doesn't mean they are completely dumping the wiki support. Also, they haven't made Staff Cuts since January of this year, I believe. There are always workarounds to this bug. I've listed a few on another thread. While it's annoying, it doesn't mean the site has to stop bringing activity. I tell you, if you leave Wetpaint, you'll be disappointed once you hear the bugs have been fixed. Every site I've been on has their annoying bugs. However, that doesn't mean I've given up hope on them. -Matt 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

@ Matt (Walrusworldstudios):No matter how much I keep looking for an answer, nobody ever gives it to me. I never said I wanted Wetpaint to be perfect. What I want to know is why we have been having waaaay more bugs in the last two months than we had ever had in the last two years, since I joined. Before the last month of August, Wetpaint wasn't perfect, but it was close because at least we hadn't had anything even close to the bugs we have now. Don't keep saying this is all normal and it has happened before because I know it isn't true. I had never had any complaints against Wetpaint before the last month of August, and now I have more that I can count. I have people on my sites creating other sites as backup and as a precaution for when the Wetpaint wikis completely fall apart. I'm well aware of all the good and neat functions Wetpaint provides and how those are hard to match on other similar free sites, and I also have way too much of a history here to leave, so I won't. At least not just yet. I'm still willing to give Wetpaint a chance, but, like I said, I wish they would explain why we have had more bugs in the last two months than we have had in the last two years. It can't be just a coincidence, specially after the business changes made. Nobody buys that anymore. I believe the Wetpaint employees (left) are doing an honest job and the best they can. It's the people in charge that I expect to come out and take responsibility for the choices they made and their more than apparent consequences. Staff cuts did occur already in January as you say, which hints to me that they were already preparing the change to the current platform and format. It's a pity to see how so many important wikis about TV shows were completely abandoned and left to the good will of us volunteer members... I will stay, keep my faith and hope for the best, though. Oh, and does anybody want to explain to me why this bug *still persists* even though the wikis were on read-only mode for "maintenance" for most of the weekend and were put online today again? Why put the wikis back up if the bug isn't fixed? What exactly was done or is been done so far? Do you find this valuable? |

What I want to know is why wasn't everything left in read only mode until it was fixed? It would save every site creator, admin and moderator being bombarded by complaints.

At the weekend, they did not work on the bugs. I believe that they just put it in Read-Only to stop an additional cascade of bugs from occuring. Basically, they shut down all the wikis, went home, and left it until Monday morning.

I would still like to know what exactly is accomplished, done or improved during all these recent read-only modes, since we keep coming back and still having all the same problems here. You guys seem to be implying that these "read-only" modes are just for damage control, even though the official word printed in red letters on the homepages is that the sites are under "maintenance". Even during weekends now, it seems... I don't really get it... Maybe it's just me. Do you find this valuable? |

"I would still like to know what exactly is accomplished, done or improved during all these recent read-only modes, since we keep coming back and still having all the same problems here. When pages get served up to users the content is read from a copy of the master database, of which we have many copies. Unfortunately, several of these copies became corrupted recently. As you can imagine, after years of user contributions our database contains a huge amount of data. Over the weekend we put the platform into read only mode while we made a copy of the master database. This took about 22 hours. Now, we are working to get the rest of the corrupted copies back into a stable state. As we add the fixed copies back into the pool of available database disks that Wetpaint reads from, things will start to work better and better from the user perspective. It is a slow process, but we should start to see improvements over the next couple days. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Any reason why those databases got corrupted? Is it possible to know? Oh, and forgive my most likely ignorance, but why don't you guys just put the corrupted copies you still have out of use while you work on them? Why don't you limit the user's access to the good copies you have even if that takes additional time difficulties for all the users to be able to access? Why do you keep allowing unlimited access to the corrupted copies even though you know they're corrupted? Personally, I would rather have some more difficulty to access a wiki due to more limited destinations available, as long as that meant I was sure to get the content and the experience I'm supposed to get... "I think he meant to quote Jeremy's post Losa. :-)"Oh, okay... that makes sense. I was thinking he might have meant I was being a good boy by (finally) acknowledging Jeremy's efforts after I had done so much ranting on this thread! LOL ;) I will not however give Wetpaint a rest until all the current problems are solved! I care for these sites waaay too much to just quit and not care anymore. This is a real home for me. I wish I had some actual technical knowledge to really help instead of just ranting and posting potentially silly questions, but I don't. You guys are just gonna have to suffer me! ;) Do you find this valuable? |
