The G25 Protest!
Jun 20 2010, 2:28 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 20 2010, 2:28 PM EDT
First we asked privately; but were dismissed.

Then we petitioned peacefully; but were silenced.

Now we protest publicly; a protest that can neither be dismissed nor silenced.

I have rallied together the largest and greatest sites of Wetpaint to ask one last time for enhanced site security. The proposals of our protest are simple; effective measures which will ensure the termination of trolls; preventative measures which will stop waves of spam bots ravaging sites; and supportive measures which will ensure the vulnerable users are protected from undesired material!

We present to the Wetpaint staff our manifesto highlighting our concerns and recommendations for possible solutions.

1. Waves of spam bots are continually attacking and destroying sites; flooding them with viruses, trojans and malicious adware!

SOLUTION: A simple logic problem to be completed during account creation; for example, “what does 2 + 7 equal?” or “Jenny is taller than Jack who is shorter than Jane. Who is tallest?” This would have several questions which computers cannot answer.
These have been proven to be 100% effective, if created properly, against attacks from a computer.

2. Person A trolls a site. The staff bans them. Person A creates another account and continues trolling; and so on and so forth.

SOLUTION: A proper IP banning system. We need the ability to properly ban users. Whilst this solution has only a 44% estimated effectiveness, it is better than the current system which has 0% effectiveness against trolls creating new accounts.

3. Auto-Account creation, this is when hundreds of accounts are created over the space of an hour or more. The accounts spam the site.

SOLUTION: Do not allow a random series of numbers to be an account name. Many of these accounts are a random series of numbers with 3 letters attached. If you simply forbid these combinations of characters during the account creation stage then there will be less of a problem.

Those are our proposals, act as you will.

The G25 protest has begun!

Show your support! Demonstrate your desire! Petition for proper protection!

The protection of your computer shouldn’t fall entirely on your shoulders, don’t allow yourself to fall victim to Wetpaint’s complacentness!

Show your support with an “AYE!”

Agreed. Too many spambots and trolls are ruining good topics and discussions. It's time we did something about it!

Oh, and "AYE!"

Logic problems are pretty much bullet proof, as far as spamming is concerned. An image-based logic problem can't be cracked by software. Can any spam software read an image for text that says, "which letters are pointing to the right?" or "what is the answer to this math problem?"

Yes, they can be cracked. With a human being. And that makes the process too labor-intensive to be worth it. You could say that certain types of problems may discriminate, a very valid concern, but the fact is, if someone can't do 1 + 1 or read what "right" means, they probably couldn't understand the interface, the terms of service, or websites in general.

They're not difficult to implement, either. They're simply variations of captcha's. It'd be perfect for the next update.

Folks, you here at wetpaint have a good enough system. One of the most user-friendly editing systems in the net, and a good enough structure for a wide variety of sites. It's very easy to get a site off the ground and running, and at the ZSDW, we've gotten an incredible number of fairly computer-illiterate folks because it's so intuitive. That's something great right there.

Still, to be completely user friendly, we need some level of security. It ain't hard, and I'm sure nobody minds security being put at the front of the developing table at all. Like I said above, it ain't hard, and we've already discussed that IP banning isn't tough. In fact... if you did logic-based capcha's and IP bans, solution #3 wouldn't even be necessary!

EDIT: Yes, that is a very much an "Aye!"

I agree wholeheartedly the improved protection would both lighten the workload of the Admin and Mods as well as creating a better environment for the users

Who needs anonymous posting? I'm already anonymous.

I agree with the above x10. I also think some features like the swear filter should be an option at the site level, not at WP HQ. I don't understand why a word should be censored when some of the banners and ads littering the site are of a vulgar nature.

Yesterday I saw one of a japanese anime woman with a cats head. She had a very curvy anatomy, and certain parts of that anatomy were visible through her poorly drawn clothing.

Aye.

May I also motion for Hawaiian shirt Fridays?

1) What's going to happen if they know who I am? An account deletion? I doubt it, that's ad revenue right there. Besides, we all know I would just come back with my name spelled Jahadazrocks or something like that. Since we know there isn't anything to prevent me from doing that.

2)100% Agree.

3) Get rid of the fawking "jack in the box" ad. It covers half of my fawking screen every time I move my cursor ANYWHERE near it. Not to mention, we don't have them in this state.

It's not even as if these are new issues. The profanity filter has been in place for a year. We asked for it to be a site-by-site implementation, and yet it is still a blanket ban. Since you were able to code it from scratch, you could have easily made it opt-in.

IP banning has been requested over, and over, and over. But whilst WP admins can do this, site Admins can't, not even temporarily.

Wetpaint seems to be a system of heavy handed kludges and overbearing policies which have negative impacts on those who run the sites. This cannot continue.

It is truly outrageous that we are required to go to such lengths as to publicly complain about the service rendered (or lack thereof) from Wetpaint, but when we suggest moving to a different service provider to have our problems solved, we are THREATENED by a well-known Wetpaint representative, telling us that we cannot use content on another site WHEN WE ARE THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR OF THAT CONTENT.

It is ridiculous to me that we must publicly plead to have some sort of band-aid cure slapped onto our problems every time one arises. We have offered suggestions, yet none of them have been taken into consideration - and we KNOW that these suggestions can be implemented.

Frankly, I find it appalling that we're being ignored time and time again, when OUR EFFORTS put money in THEIR COFFERS.

Wetpaint, please give us some help!

Your site Wetpaint. You claim that the content of every site is yours?

Protect it. Or we the makers of those big sites you covet won't.

Dear Wetpaint:

Instead of installing a censor, please take the amount of time it takes to put a little captcha box. I'm sure it wouldn't take too long.

Also, perhaps put a limit on how many account can be made by oine address in a day?
