Suggestion (Serious Post!)

I have a suggestion for how the new system could work.

I run a Warrior Cats RPG site, and being grouped together with the things that the big fans don't care about, like True Blood or Top Chef, is frustrating. Most of us Warrior Cats RPGs, let's call them WC RPGs for short, are kind of competitive, I even know of happenings where another site will hack another to gain position (it actually happened to me).
Instead of grouping all the websites together, maybe it'd be best to categorize. I don't just mean how you categorize when you first make your website, I mean on purpose. And maybe multiple lists of what it counts. For example. . .
RPG Websites
• Warrior Cats
• Human Fantasy/Anime
• Video Game/Book
TV
• Weeds Fansites
• Dexter Fansites
etc
Also, in each big category just group them all together, like put all the RPGs together. Then, divide into the WC RPGs and do multiple lists. Activity, member count, even put up a five-star rating system.

Another suggestion - Personally, I don't like how Wetpaint displays all those big websites. It gives the smaller ones less of a chance.
So, maybe at the bottom you can put two random websites with, at least 100 members that isn't in the top 20 in their ranking in their category, in each category for half the day, and another in each category of one that's just starting (at the bottom of every Wetpaint page like you have now). This way, the smaller websites have more of a chance.
Or, put a "Websites you might also like"

I hope that's not too confusing, and I hope you take my suggestion.
-Thank you

Suggestions have already been taken into account and the new system is being developed. Not trying to burst your bubble, but your first point has already been suggested in fact we had a huge debate about it which members even started a petition for, we ended up making a Top 50 Non-Roleplaying Sites list which was updated weekly by CaptainSpaz in his own free time. This idea I would assume is trying to be put into the new system since a number of us felt it wasn't fair to group every fan site with a much more popular subject in Warrior Cats. Also keep in mind a system which sorts things by such broad subjects will likely make huge mistakes. For example the system will look for the keyword weeds, while you may get some for television, you may also end up getting sites for actual weeds in the ground.

Your second point I agree on, but people tend to ignore it even if they see it. The featured sites are meant to give you links to a popular site with a topic that catches your interest so you can get into things right away. While creating your own site can be fulfilling as you watch it grow, still you can always work your way up on another site and before you know it you are basically calling that site your own and get the same feeling if not better because you had to do just that much work to get where you were.

Overall you shouldn't care so much about number, but rather quality. I have a site with 5,000+ members maybe only 50 of which are ever active in the month and maybe only 10 are ever active in a week. Still even if it was just me and those 10 members it would be fine because we are all good friends and we always have a good time regardless of rank.

Thanks for at least replying ^@^

All good points. All ideas and all plans have flaws and that's what the Wetpaint crew works wonderfully for. To iron them out!

Sure, I like to reply to ideas whenever I see them. I usually point out what Wetpaint is thinking to begin with a couple of times so you may not always get a reply from one of them directly. Hope I didn't come off too harsh, I sort of go on a little rant when it comes to the "Wetpaint 500" because of all the comments over the last couple of months.
Still on your second point, the addition of something like "Top New Sites" wouldn't be a bad addition to allow sites to grow. I can't honestly say if something like that was in the works, but it would be helpful to new sites who are trying to make a name for themselves.

It really is hard to advertise, and only the bigger sites get people because you ALWAYS see their names. So maybe the semi-active sites should be featured as well, atleast once or twice. Do you find this valuable?
