Reasons I may leave Wetpaint
Feb 16 2010, 3:59 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 16 2010, 3:59 PM EST
Hi, my name is Alex (aka: Dingo) and my Organization is launching a new website for the "MyCancer Organization". We specialize in helping cancer patients in our area with Cancer Information, news, support, and personal experiences. I recently made a Wetpaint Site for my organization:

http://mycancer.wetpaint.com/

However, I see that Wetpaint does not offer many of the services that my friends preference has (he prefers Wikia wikis). Basically, his group gets

1. Customizable Tabs (the navigation on top is too broad and not what I'm looking for
2. Fixed Centered 1024 X 768 (i heard wetpaint dropped this feature)
3. Full SEO on Google and Yahoo search engines
4. In general, a more structured and lively community
5. FREE customized .com URL
6. A free partnership with them
7. A small fee for removal of ADS

I don't know about you, but this sounds a lot better than what Wetpaint can offer me and my organization! Seriously, $19.95 for NO ADS, no fixed width, no SEO support, and a no free URL? This is absurd! Can Wetpaint at least try and match this offer in a few categories?

I love the Wetpaint interface, and how easy it can be; however, I am going in the direction that is best for the MyCancer Organiztion.

However, once again, if Wetpaint.com, inc can match some of the foundations laid forth above - then I shall have no problem staying with the company and refering organizations and businesses in my area to Wetpaint.

Thank you for your time,
Alex

I'm sorry you might be leaving Wetpaint, as it is such a wonderfull wiki provider. I do not think they will lower the price of ad free sites. Wetpaint used to offer ad-free educational sites, but, it was costing Wetpaint alot of money, so for a while, they will not change the cost for any ad-free sites any time soon.

1. We can help you with customizing the navigation tabs on your site
2. We can change your site to a 1024 fixed/centered format
3. Wetpaint is fully SEO friendly.
4. Not sure what this means
5. Wetpaint sites support custom domains and there is no charge for this.
6. What kind of partnership?
7. We did research into what other sites charge for ad removal and decided on $19.95 as a price that was competitive. If we find that many other services are now offering this type of feature for significantly less, then we may need to reevaluate our price.

Sorry to lead off the subject, but why does removing ads force Wetpaint to lose money? Do you find this valuable?

"Sorry to lead off the subject, but why does removing ads force Wetpaint to lose money?"
Advertising companies pay Wetpaint to put ads on Wetpaint Wikis. That's how Wetpaint makes money.

"5. FREE customized .com URL"
Wetpaint doesn't charge you for a custom URL. The only thing you need to pay for is the domain name itsself.

So what your saying is - wetpaint will not pay for a transferal to a .org or .com name? Wikia is picking up the cost for me....

You need to buy a domain from a domain hosting provider. You can purchase a domain on sites like GoDaddy. Once you purchase the domain, you need to go to Settings, and hit the "Upgrades" tab. Then, you would need to apply the domain to your site. The domain extension is the only thing you need to purchase. Do you find this valuable?

At almost all free wiki farms and almost all free website hosts, you must purchase the domain name yourself, like you must do at Wetpaint. You can attach it to any Wetpaint wiki for free though. Do you find this valuable?

Uh ok. See Wikia can provide you with a custom domain name for free if the cause is within a certain limitation , or you partner site with them. I was wondering if Wetpaint would do the same Do you find this valuable?

Wetpaint has built in SEO support with Google and Yahoo, just give your wiki some time.

Your customized URL/Domain, you just pay $10.00 per year through GoDaddy and you're set! It is free on Wetpaint.

Advantage of Wikia... is that it comes in more than 180 languages...
http://translators.wikia.com/wiki/International
I would love to have that for Wetpaint too... as Wetpaint is more user friendly / easier to use.
My Dutch wiki (Dutch version of another English Wetpaint site) doesn't work well...
I can put up Dutch content... but still all Wetpaint features & tools, help & support, etc... are in English. And the message system does not support other languages !
So I heard from lots of Dutch members, it is too difficult to understand for them... so they don't use it...
Google translations is no option... Translations are bad... not understandable...
Those who do understand enough English, will go to the (original) English version of the site (other Wetpaint site).

It's a little hard to take the original poster seriously. From Jeremy's response, it's clear that the OP hasn't really done his research.

I started a Wikia wiki before transitioning to Wetpaint.
http://tms.wikia.com/wiki/Tension_Myositis_Syndrome_Wiki

The ads are unacceptably bad at Wikia, the page design is cluttered an unattractive, and having to use Wikipedia style markup scares away my users away. Furthermore, their business practices are questionable, so I don't trust them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikia
(though what Wetpaint did to private site operators is pretty hard to defend.)

Further, I wasn't aware that Wikia had an ad free version. Is this just another case of the original poster being clueless?
