Viruses caused by Advertisements
Jan 2 2010, 9:08 PM EST
I've noticed it on my computer for a long tiem, but I never thougth it was a problem until one of my friends tried to join and he got the same viruses i got on my computer, on his laptop. My other friend, already a user, has noticed the same thign but like me she didnt have as much of a problem with it.....The virus is this: The computer immediately preforms an unprompted scan by a protection program not installed on the computer being used. The results coem in at at least 3500 viruses, exactly 34 of them being critical. The non-critical viruses are usually tracking cookies, the critical ones are all Trojans and Webmailworms (or soemthign liek that... Webworm..? or Mailworm..? can't remember) and then the program says it can fix the viruses. naturally anyone would click it, but then it turns out that you ave to buy the program. if you do, it does nothing. If you dont, it keeps on popping up saying you have to buy it. Do you find this valuable? |

There is a simple solution to this problem, and how you can smash this trojan, for it infected my computer as well......1. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Virus 2. Shut down your computer 3. As you turn your computer on, click 'F8' on your keyboard to enter into safe mode. 4. Once logged on, click Malwarebytes' Anti-Virus and run a full scan 5. After the scan is complete, it should have the virus noted in the report 6. Click "remove virus" and Malwarebytes should destroy the virus 7. Restart your computer to exit Safe Mode * Note: if this trick does not work, you may want to try a Windows Recovery Disk, and fully reboot your system, but this should be a last resort. * Do you find this valuable? |

My personal take on this and with the SWP2009demo trojan, is that it stems from a security vulnerability of Adobe Flash Player. Adobe released a bulletin informing the community that Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in the current versions of Adobe Flash Player (v9.0.159.0 and v10.0.22.87) for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris operating systems, and the authplay.dll component that ships with Adobe Reader and Acrobat v9.x for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX operating systems. These vulnerabilities could cause the application to crash and could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. To verify the Adobe Flash Player version number, access the About Flash Player page, or right-click on Flash content and select “About Adobe (or Macromedia) Flash Player” from the menu. If you use multiple browsers, perform the check for each browser you have installed on your system. Here is the link http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ Here is a link to download the patch to bring your Adobe Flash Player up to version 10.0.42.34 http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ Make sure you download the patch for the different browser's you may be using. This may not fix any issues already exiting, but will certainly prevent them from happening in the future. Do you find this valuable? |

If you are infected with the SWP2009 trojan, use the instructions that are posted in reply # 1, post made by Joshutex.

"The members of one of my wetpaint sites have called and told me that when they arrive @ the home page they get a virus i have not seen my self but i rarely log out any help would be greatly appreciated Thank You."Wetpaint should be working on any malware warnings that are fake, and the trojan horses coming from an ad. Don't worry, they should be working on this right now. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

If anyone sees this virus/malware warning when they visit a Wetpaint page, please take a screenshot that shows what ads are on the page. And (for Firefox users) if possible, use Firebug to inspect the ad so we can isolate and turn it off. We have instructions on how to use Firebug here:http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Ads Thanks for your help! Do you find this valuable? |

Instead, use whatever anti-virus software you already have installed on your computer or download an anti-virus program from a reputable source. I have seen cases where ads for anti-virus software have been used to install malware on your computer. I don't know for certain if this is the case here, but it's better to be safe than sorry. If anyone sees an ad associated with anti-virus software, please let us know as many details about it as possible. Do you find this valuable? |

"If you get a pop up that says something about your computer being infected and that you need to install virus scanning software, I DO NOT recommend you click on it."Too late I’m afraid; This one was pretty clever, actually; Closing the window itself is what caused the program to upload itself. God damned virus writer (words I can’t use here), why don’t they just get jobs and a life like the rest of the universe… 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

There was the DollHouse ad, (Thats definitely not it) and the World of War Craft ad (That might be it). The page was loading, and the ads were visible at the time. When the page finished loading, the warning came up. I could not get a screenshot of the ad. Do you find this valuable? |
