Using superscripts and subscripts on your pages

This tip was submitted in another thread and I personally find it great. So I have copied the text and posted it here. The credit for this tip goes to member APDW (Anne) http://continuing-chemistry.wetpaint.com/page/Typing+special+characters

How to add subscript and superscript in text?

There are heaps of characters available for use on web pages that don't appear on a computer keyboard. Some you can type by knowing the keyboard shortcuts (eg ½) while others can be pasted in.

Here is a set of characters I paste into documents when needed:

Tick and cross
✓ ✔ ✗ ✘ ☥

Superscript codes
⁰ ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ⁺ ⁻ ⁼ ⁽ ⁾ ²⁺ ³⁺ ²⁻ ³⁻

Subscript codes
₀ ₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ ₅ ₆ ₇ ₈ ₉ ₊ ₋ ₌ ₍ ₎

Greek
Δ Σ Ω δ μ

→ ← ↔ ⇄ ⇋ ⇌ ↑ ↓

Mathematical symbols
√ ∛ × ÷ ≡

Fractions
¼ ½ ¾ ⅓ ⅔ ⅕ ⅖ ⅗ ⅘ ⅙ ⅚ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞ ⅟

I've put all these characters on a special page on my chemistry wetpaint site, so that people can copy and paste them as needed.

Assuming you have Widows XP (like I do);
Click “Start,” “All Programs,” “Accessories,” “System Tools,” LEFT click “Character Map” (may be listed as “Charmap”). A popup SHOULD come up saying “Open, Run As, Scan With…” etc. RIGHT click “Send To,” then “Desktop (create shortcut).” Pick and choose the character(s) you want. I set up my MS Word that when I type “(!)” and “<?>,” inverted exclamation and question marks appear (respectively) by deliberately typing in a misspelled word, then in the “Replace” box typing in the line I wanted (in this example (!)), then in the “With” box pasting in the symbol I wanted (in this case, ¡).

Or, you could just:

1. Start
2. Scroll over to "Run"
3. Type in charmap

The next time you click "Start" it should appear as a quick reference, or the applications that appear without the use of going to all programs
