How can I block Search Engines from finding my deleted pages?
Nov 24 2009, 5:33 PM EST
I am the creator and sole member of my site. I deleted some pages from my site as I preferred. However, search engines still index my deleted pages. Could I forward my deleted page links to my home page.

"I am the creator and sole member of my site. I deleted some pages from my site as I preferred. However, search engines still index my deleted pages. Could I forward my deleted page links to my home page. "I do not believe that is possible. However, you may be able to email Wetpaint and ask them to delete it from their servers all together. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I do not believe that is possible. "Thank you very much for your explanation that the problem pages are supposed to be deleted from wetpaint.com server too. It is Bing/Facebook Search Engine that reveals deleted pages including deleted page history links or all old versions. These pages are not supposed to be public; unfortunately, they are. As you suggested I will ask wetpaint support help. Do you find this valuable? |

I am not able to contact info@wetpaint.com. My problem has not been solved. Is there any e-mail to contact wetpaint.com support to request removal of deleted pages from wetpaint.com server?

I have also e-mailed an URL removal request to Bing.com (Search Engine) and asked removal of the problem URL from their index. I am still waiting for an action from Bing.com.

To remove problem page from Bing.com Search Engine one should use <meta> tags or the X-Robots-Tag directive in the HTTP header to control webpage indexing and link crawling. When I delete a page I believed that I automatically performed this function. However, it seems that wetpaint.com metatags are not recognized by big Search Engines such as Bing. Deleted pages are supposed to be password protected; however, they are not. Bing.com search Engine is breaking wetpaint.com passwords. This is a big problem.

Deleted pages are NOT password protected, however. When a page is deleted, the page is gone, and I believe the meta tags are still present when the page is deleted. However, the only way to access a deleted page is to be a moderator or above, and view the deleted page list. It is VERY difficult for a user to find a deleted page. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "Deleted pages are NOT password protected, however. When a page is deleted, the page is gone, and I believe the meta tags are still present when the page is deleted. Thanks for your reply. Below is the metatag related explanation from Bing.com at http://help.live.com/Help.aspx?market=en-US&project=WL_Webmasters&querytype=topic&query=WL_WEBMASTERS_CONC_RestrictAccessToSite.htm To block a search engine appropriate ''nofollow'' metatag should be inserted to the deleted pages by wetpaint.com webmaster. Fortunately, wetpaint.com search engine does not index this deleted page but Bing.com does. This deleted page has been protected by a wetpaint.com password; but Bing.com, without sign in password, makes this page visible and indexes it. Do you find this valuable? |

As you stated the only way to access a deleted page is to be a moderator or above. However, the problem page is visible to anyone, to all Internet viewers; and, still indexed by Bing.com as my other public site pages.

I see your problem. So, it is not the Wetpaint Search Engine you are having trouble with, but the Bing Search Engine. Well, I have a few things you could do to try to prevent the deleted pages from showing up. Some pages have tags. If there are tags on the deleted pages, you need to remove them. These tags will prevent the page from showing up on searches. Tags are the key part of this. So, try removing the tags on the pages and see if that prevents them from showing up on search engines. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

This may work, I am not sure, but worth a try.Place the code below into a text file <META NAME="robots" CONTENT="nofollow" /> Save the file as a html file with an html extension e.g. Block.html Attach that html file to a page on your wiki Right click on the attachment filename and copy the url address for that file. Paste that url address into the following code replacing the address between the quote marks afer scr= <iframe name="I1" src="http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/Tz4dT%24zqmG0f%3D%3D3995" width="250" height="150" scrolling="no"> Copy this code and go to the deleted pages and paste the code into the "Other Widget" window of the widget tool of easyedit. You can then copy the widget to all of the deleted pages. This should prevent indexing of your deleted pages, I think? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Well, I have a few things you could do to try to prevent the deleted pages from showing up.Thank you for your help. After signing-into my site, restoring/making-visible the problem page, I found one tag on the page. I removed it; and, I will wait for next crawling of Bing.com Search Engine as you suggested. If Bing Search Engine indexes the deleted page URL for more than 5 months, I will create a new thread at wetpaint.com asking help again. Do you find this valuable? |

"This may work, I am not sure, but worth a try."Thank you for explaining this method. I will definitely try it. At first, instead of attaching the file on the problem WIKI, I may attach it to another WIKI. If it does not work I will attach the html file on a page from the same WIKI. "This may work, I am not sure, but worth a try."I applied the procedure exactly. My pages with 'nofollow' code widget give a notice stating 'To help protect your security, IE blocked this site...''. However, this page still gives 200 OK HTTP status code, when tested with webmaster tools. I will wait for next crawling of Bing Search Engine and index update to see if the problem is solved. As of today, unfortunately the deleted page is still visible to anyone and indexed by Bing Search Engine. However, something improved: This deleted page somehow disappeared from Facebook/Bing Search Engine web results. Thanks to you all for all valuable explanations.

Two years ago wetpaint.com technique was different. By renaming (automatically changing the URL of the page) I was able to break the links to problem pages. However, recently wetpaint made an arrangement to forward renamed pages to previous URL. That's why renaming the page failed to solve the problem too.

"Contact Wetpaint here:For me, it is a big problem if a deleted page is found. Unfortunately, there is no way to delete 'complete history' link from wetpaint pages. Complete History link stays visible on the problem deleted pages. Thanks for contact link. I have already e-mailed this problem to wetpaint.com support including the exact deleted page URLs. However, I do not suppose that knowing the exact page URL could solve this technical bug problem. Do you find this valuable? |
