swear words
Nov 6 2009, 9:47 PM EST | Post edited: Nov 6 2009, 9:47 PM EST
I have been away from wetpaint for a few months, but recently tried to add new content to my site.

After I had saved the new page, I noteced that the swear words has been replaced with ****s. As I have older pages on my site with swear words intact, what is going on?

I appreciate that some people might find the use of such language offensive, but due to the nature of my site (mostly my own fiction writing), swearing is sometimes used, but always with respect, and always in context.

I do not use such language lightly, but would like to know why I can no longer use it at all.

If it is a case of not offending minors, then would it not be better to be able to place age restrictions on who can view a site?

This is a new feature added in one of the past releases. But you can suggest the option of taking it off on the following page:

Well, this is a new update by wetpaint that was made a few months ago. The Wetpaint system automatically censors any inappropriate words that children may read. This is mainly to protect children. However, Wetpaint may be working on a way to turn on and off the censor ability on your site. Please be patient, and they may release this feature soon!

Please read more about the update in the following release:

It has been like that. Although, the age restrictions are to 13 or older. I do not really see why Wetpaint has it on, since kids at 13 use cuss words.

People have suggested to have it removed multiple times, or atleast have a way to turn censoring on or off.

People have suggested that the censoring be an option to use on wikis.

Even though Federal U.S Law requires users to be of age 13 or older, children under still 13 frequently brake this.

Here is Wetpaint's official response to the word filter.

Wednesday Sep 2, Jeremy_Wetpaint posted this with regards to the filter.

"We needed to get this filter out the door quickly in order to protect some of the larger (and more sensitive) sites. We're generally not big fans of censorship either, and I'm talking with one of our lead guys on the development team to see about implementing some kind of ability to turn this thing on or off on a site by site basis."

Hope this settles all the speculations past and present as to the reasons why. And shed some light as to Wetpaint's stance on this matter.
