Deleting old profiles and activity tracking?
Nov 6 2009, 12:28 AM EST
I have student group projects from the past course that I need to completely remove from the private wikis, to make room for new student groups to use the same wikis. I have deleted all pages, threads, etc; but seem to be having problems with being able to delete all traces to past user profiles... I have banned the members; but that alone doesn't seem to truly remove their information, because if I go to the 'updates' section, it still lists all of the recent updates, as well as in the 'Community Activity' box at right, the profiles of past members (even if they are 'banned'), and by clicking on their profiles, one is still taken to their profile information, as well as the 'contributions' link on that profile page, showing ALL of their past work done... I have been able to 'remove' the profiles of some old members (by clicking on the 'remove' link underneath their profile photo), which also seemed to remove references to them in the 'Community Activity' box in some of the wikis, but not in others... it is extremely inconsistent, as I'm doing the same task with different results, seemingly for no reason. How can I truly remove old members' profiles (and all links to them)? I need to be able to do this, before I can re-use the educational websites for new groups of students. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you. Do you find this valuable? |

Make a new site. That's the easiest way.

No, it isn't, if I want ads-free educational website, as these are. (Since new sites have to be paid, to have ads removed). So, is there another way or not?

You can't really remove a profie, even if you ban them or ask them to cancel their membership. But if you want to clear the links to their profile on the "Updates" section, you can keep making a lot of activity on your site. (Posting threads, editing pages...) That way, all the activity you make can cover up all the past activity your old student groups have made.

That's a good idea... I have tried it and it seems to work (adding new 'recent' activity), but for example in the 'Community Activity' box, it still keeps the 'older' activities listed in place, even from months ago, where some of these activities are linking to the old profiles... how can these older activities be 'over-written' with new ones? Thank you.

To get rid of the activity in the 'Community Activity' box, you have to do things in our profile. The best thing to do is go to your profile, press the edit button, and save it again without doing anything. That should do it.

I tried, and it does add new stuff to it, but, it puts these new changes only into the new recent activity section ('today'), whereas the older stuff (as old as June of this year) is still kept there, regardless of how many new things I do now.. same thing is for the 'updates' section, where I can add new activities such as new threads, pages, etc. So I guess the question is how to remove (or over-ride) the oldest stuff... or to even change how old activities are kept for? Thanks.

Sorry, I don't understand. There shouldn't be any old stuff in the Updates section. Can you take a screenshot? If you look at the Updates bar here on Wetpaint Central, you shouldn't see any old activity.

There most definitely is a different 'older' section listed at the bottom of both the updates and the 'community activity' section, different from the updates on this page. There is no way for me to attach a screenshot here. I have sent you a private message, please check it.

Sadly, there is really no fix to this yet but a great suggestion. Do you find this valuable? |

What I don't understand is why these 'older updates' stick in some wikis, yet not in others (when I 'remove' profile photos of old - banned - members, which seemed to remove all links to their profiles, but only in some wikis, and not others.) In any case, I guess this means, unfortunately, that I can't use these again for student projects... *sigh* Thanks everyone for responding quickly, at least. T.O. Do you find this valuable? |

This is actually a regular feature of most other wikis - the ability to remove members and references to them; it is not so 'unusual', nor should it be a 'custom-design' idea. Just a basic feature of a wiki-page, just as deleting-content (such as photo and video albums posted by writers themselves) should also be part of 'editing' a wiki. Group projects is a common educational use of wiki-pages.Thanks anyways, but I will need to use a different wiki-page provider who can do this. T.O. Do you find this valuable? |
