Censoring - Remove it!
Oct 1 2009, 8:06 PM EDT | Post edited: Oct 1 2009, 8:06 PM EDT
At the least, I suggest it for private wetpaint sites. I can barely understand doing it on open sites, but if your able to check out a wetpaint site, you've heard them all. But the **** stuff is out of hand. Someone tried sharing a link, and a combination of two words spelled out
S
H
I
T

and in the link 30 characters of the link where *ed out. He was posting a link about astronomy. Yea, gotta censor that link about solar flares hitting us.

Make it an option on private sites, think about it on public sites.
Some of us write and create fan flicks about TV series and sometimes the use of strong words is needed .. A WORD THAT IS SAID ON THE TV SHOW ABOUT THE WIKI.
So yea...

Well, there are little kids who get on wetpaint, so that is why it is censored on most sites. Censored words will stay on for a while here on Wetpaint. Now, if your site is made where 18+ only are aloud, then maybe it can be removed for them.

Er, Dove? You know that's true, and I know that's true, but should we be TELLING them how to curse online? I just.... see it as unethical...

No, we shouldn't Spanier, I agree, Dove, did you really HAVE to tell them how to do that, especially here on WPC?! 0_0

I don't know...I kinda think that I agreed with Spanier. The longer it stays up, the more will know. I am trying to censor myself. Thanks Spanier.

If it were to be made an option on a private site, it would likely be made an option on a public site. I believe that Wetpaint is currently looking for a way to make this feature optional, but may remove it if they can't. Do you find this valuable?

I agree; or at least improve the censoring filter. I have a wetpaint that involves a lot of Japanese titles, and して is a very common word (it's "to cause/do") pronounced shee-tay but spelled shi-te, and it's frustrating to see it censored. =_= It's like censoring "is" or something. I'm totally willing to have an 18+ older only site, but I would do it only if the censoring is removed. I agree that kids should be considered, but honestly, tv, news, etc is worse than a few curse words online.

Yea, I understand that they're trying to control flamewars too, but flamewars don't usually happen within the articles themselves? If there IS a curse word that needs to be in an article, then it's probably there for a reason..! A lot of TV fans want to keep things as 100% accurate as possible, and not all the TV shows on this site are G rated!!

For me it's frustating. I want to type accurate lyrics to songs however it doesn't work if half the words are astericked out...! And those aren't even curse words.

Maybe if anything, keep the censoring to the discussion threads. That way it protects against flame wars without interfering with the verity of the content.

The arguments about protecting little kids on wetpaint are silly. Aside from the fact that there is nothing said on here that they wouldn't hear in school or on MySpace, the TOP TV sites on here are a little too much for kids as well. Supernatural? Fringe? Dexter?? CSI? Vampire Diaries? If the point of censoring is to protect kids from words, then better censor them from violence and sexuality too. 9_9 [What I'm saying is, kid protection isnt a good argument for censoring on this site.]

The censoring filter is in place for the same reasons you may find on the normal "tube". This provider (Wetpaint) allowing for a free service is like ABC,NBC or CBS. Not Showtime or the Playboy channel. Wetpaint's sponsors (Advertisers) say they don't want their ads on sites that use smut or cursing. The advertisers pay the bills. Now you pay the bills (Cable premium channels) for your "tube" excitement, so you can pay for a premium site with no advertisements. Maybe you can convince Wetpaint to remove the filter for your premium site.

And as Fermi, stated. It doesn't take too much intelligence to by-pass the filter with ease and without disruption of readability of the special words you may want to use.

Well, if Wetpaint is for 13+, I'm pretty sure 13+ people curse. Do you find this valuable?

Yes, but it looks childish... it looks exactly what you said :( like i'm by-passing a goofy mediocre filter that can't tell the difference between a real word that happens to have a "curse word" in it, and actual flaming.

And you mentioned that it's real easy to bypass it - so what is the point of it then? If a 12 year old knows how to type "****" he'll know how to put spaces in it too, and he'll know how to read it with spaces in between it. So then......... there's just no point in it at all...?

And shows on ABC and NBC and Fox and stuff have "soft" cursing in em all the time. o_o Additionally, "South Park" and "L Word" and "Dexter" are all represented on this site - that seems to cover most everything an advertiser would want to avoid right? Profanity, sex, and violence?

Most people do this to bypass it. They put numbers as substitutes. Example: Pokemon = P0k3m0n Do you find this valuable?

i agree, claiming that its for kids is pretty stupid excuse. the Supernatural wiki is mine and sometimes swears are needed (b**** is used quite a bit in the show, not to mention the amount of violence heavily outweighs the use of swears, which is much worse for kids! lol) and used on the site in reference.

keeping it to discussion threads would be really great, though i would think it would be a little difficult to set that up. and plus, thats what moderators are for. i actually promoted one of my members, who are on the threads A LOT to moderate, specifically, the threads for bad language or flamewars.

in my opinion, the censorships should go. i understand, if CD is correct, that Wetpaint needs to satisfy their advertisers demands, but i also think that on the majority of wetpaint sites, foul language is not that big an issue.

and kids have heard, and USED a lot worse! i was walking down the middle school hallway in my school and i was amazed! sure the highschoolers use bad language but OMG! the things those little 10 year olds talked about! lol i REALLY dont think a few bad words on wikis will affect them at ALL! lol

I think there should be a feature where you canjust have an option if you want it or not. Because for me, I despise cussing greatly. It is something you will not see me do.

I think having an option to choose it or not will benefit everybody. Because alot of people don't like cussing, but alot of others do.

Well I mean if WetPaint can't remove the censoring for specific reasons, then that's fine.

But it shouldn't filter things like 消失 or して romanized (shoushi-tsu / shi-te) just because it's a crappy filter.... WetPaint should at least get a filter that doesn't censor supposed curse words inside of real words.

I know 5 year olds who sware all the time, not something thats new...besides I doubt bible thumping children are going to wander onto sites that use profanities and stay there to learn vocabulary especially if there is an 18+ or warning in the beginning of the website Do you find this valuable?
