I too am opposed to the word filter. Our site has a very affluant fiction section and the swear words create both suspense and add drama. The censorship is ridiculous if it cannot be turned off. Thanks for any reply in advance. Marsden 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

Ditto.Whilst I can understand implementing a filter, blanket coverage is not the way to go. Either it should be: *opt-in or opt-out per site, the choice of the Creator. *opt-in or opt-out per user, per site. the choice of the User. Censorship in any form should only be of the self, not others. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"if your trying to protect the kiddies, youv'e failed, theyd hear much worse stuff on the bus"Not to mention the fact that children will see far worse things over the internet than the occasional four-letter word. Even then, Wetpaint has no responsibility to the clueless parents who allow their kids to do whatever they very well please on the net, and shouldn't feel any need to tend to said children's (who, again, surely see far worse sights than four-letter words over the internet) virgin minds or to their sedentary parents. It's the parents' job to have clues and to prevent their children from doing things that they shouldn't do and going places that they shouldn't go over the internet. You owe them nothing, and we, the individuals who use your system, owe them nothing. I fail to see what inconveniencing and annoying everybody above thirteen will accomplish, in terms of placing all children and hypersensitive individuals within a protective bubble, and on the internet, of all things. I apologize for how abrasive this post is, but such is often the best way to make one's point absolutely clear. Anyway, I agree with PedroAsani; it should be opt-in only. The censor being the default setting makes sense, but its being the exclusive setting is a bit too much. Sorry; just one more note: Why weren't wiki Creators/Administrators informed of the new policy? Shouldn't we have been? Thanks for reading, Drew. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

We needed to get this filter out the door quickly in order to protect some of the larger (and more sensitive) sites. We're generally not big fans of censorship either, and I'm talking with one of our lead guys on the development team to see about implementing some kind of ability to turn this thing on or off on a site by site basis.

It should be turned on by default, Admins should be able to turn it off in the site settings and edit which words get censored. Sounds like too much work... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

i too am opposed to this filter it realy has no point, if cursing were so bad for all those kidds that its trying to protect then it should be thier parents obbligation to restict them. on another not if you need to be restircted as to what language you hear or in this case read you shouldnt be on a zombie survival site anyway when its all about shooting heads off and running for your life. this filter realy makes no sence and is a waste of effort from all. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. When asked for my personal preference I don't like swearing that much however sometimes a good blue streak is good. I don't care for this filter at all as some users on the sites I belong come up with amazing stories and topics that sometimes have swearwords. That doesn't bother me.

"How do you shut off the swear word filter? "I am running a genealogy site. One of the Surnames is "****' which has been filtered out. This filter needs to be corrected ASAP. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

We'll be looking forward to the removal of the word censors in future. Also on this issue, I understand a member of my staff; StrykerPez was banned on the site for using a swearword. 1#brave was the moderator who banned him I believe. In the Wetpaint rules it clearly states in Rule 3 Paragraph 1 Subsection 2 The consequences are "3 strikes and you're out." StrykerPez had yet to recieve a single strike or been contacted by a moderator regarding the devolution of his grammar. I understand that mistakes happen, may I appeal the ban please? You're right, there is a three strikes policy. I will un-ban StrykerPez, but please remind him not to use swear words or offensive language while on WPC. Thanks.

Regarding the obscenity filter, are filtered words still counting towards the strikes? If I was to say, "That is (insert f word here: *******) brilliant" would that use up one of my 3 strikes? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

JEREMY - This is all the reason why you guys here at wetpaint should consult with site creators FIRST before you add or change anything..things that need fixing aren't fixed and things that would make the site easier to work on arent done. If you can get an off/on button then that would be appreciated by all for sure.

Yes, please allow implementation/customisation on a site-by-site basis. I'm not so worried about the banning of swear words myself, but it is causing problems with the naming of Chinese actors which include the inoffensive word t-i-t. I am sure bird lovers would face similar issues!
