Confused!!!! About Permissions
Aug 27 2009, 7:14 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 27 2009, 7:14 PM EDT
Okay... let me get this straight. I'm a little confused about how permissions work. I've read all the documentation regarding permissions but it's still confusing.

I would like to build a public site where only "writers" can edit the content, but "registered users" can comment and start new discussion threads but cannot edit page content.

From what i've read so far, it appears that this is only possible if I make my site private. Am I correct?

Sorry, but you are incorrect.

Go to Settings, select Permissions, select I want to change these settings.
Under
Who should be able to edit this website?
You should see 3 choices. Select Only people I invite.
Save your changes and now your site will have the writer permission.

Do you need additional information on how to promote members?

Thank you for your help. No, I think I know how to promote members (I've read too many documentations!)

Another feature I would like is to be able to approve users before they can do anything on the website. Is that possible?

No, I'm sorry it isn't possible to approve users before they can do anything. I believe this has been suggested before. I looked up the results, but the only suggestions they had were adding the writer permission to your site.

Still, when a member joins your site the only thing they can do is comment until you promote them to writer. So it shouldn't be to much of a concern.

Yes, if you don't want them to be able to JOIN the site without approval, make it a private site. It is under the site settings menu. That way, nobody but those you and your admins invite can join. Or could mods invite too? I forget. Somebody bail me out? Do you find this valuable?

Moderators on private sites also have the ability to invite members. Consider yourself bailed out. XD

As of September 22, 2009 (or maybe earlier)

From Wet Paint:
<<
No Invites for Private Sites!
Wetpaint recently dropped support for private sites. This means private sites cannot send invitations to people/users that they want to join the site.

Yes that is true, and it was removed before the 22nd.
However, that has no relevance to this question which was asked nearly a month ago. This users was wondering about user permissions more then having a private site. So please do not post in an old question unless you are trying to make a reference or you have a question on the same topic, but the thread did not help you solve the problem.

Thank you,

I am currently a moderator on a private site, which was created in July 2009. I recently did try to invite new members and the people who responded to the invitations could not log in to the site after they registered. If Wetpaint is no longer supporting private sites, how do we remove the private status? Do you find this valuable?

Private wikis are still supported as of now.

Do these members show up on your wiki's members list?

No. None of the people that I invited have been able to get in to the private site. They register with a username and password, that gives them access to Wetpaint, but they can't get to the wiki. Do you find this valuable?

The solution is to change your site permissions so that it is not private and invited members will then be able to join. Once the members have joined you can change the site back to private.
