Is it possible to have a choice for a site: "Public, by invite only"?

As it stands now, if you want your site to be public, you have to also allow anyone and everyone to join. I would like to allow my sites to be "public", but I would also like to have control of who can join and thus participate and contribute. Chances are, who I invite will also be okay to be contributing members. Would it be possible to have a "public, by invite only" option? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

You could add the writer role to your site. This will allow you to choose who can edit on your site, however users would still be able to join and post comments. However only members that your promote to writers would be able to edit the site.
