Ads

Okay, here are a few things about ads summed up into one thread. There has been much complaining about Wetpaint removing the ad-free education program. Why did they remove it? They were running out of money. http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Ad+Free+Education+Sites You can report ads that your students should not be seeing at: info@wetpaint.com The steps are at the bottom of this page. http://wetpaintcentral.com/page/Ads A few staff members of Wetpaint, including the popular Jason_Wetpaint were laid off. Very sad ;( Now, header ads are above the pages in a new spot. It looks more like they weren't just put there. Many are asking, "What do the header ads have to do with the content of my site?" Nothing. They have nothing to do with the conent of your site. Why, you ask? Header ads simply pay a lot, and there are not enough related-to-your-site header ads. Text ads, are normally related to your site. For example, I have a bunch of articles and discussions about the Swine Flu. A lot of ads are about Swine Flu. This is common for header ads to be unlike the content of the site. Look at many sites you go to. YouTube.com, IGN.com, popular online game sites, and even World of Warcraft. ~JJ 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

""What do the header ads have to do with the content of my site?" Nothing. They have nothing to do with the conent of your site. "Leaderboard ads and Skyscraper ads are selected by Wetpaint. You may see Mpire ads, World of Warcraft ads or even ads from Netflix and possibly some Google Ad-sense ads. Ad-Sense ads are determined by the content of your site. Not by the words on your site, but by the Category that your site falls under. Wetpaint sends Ad-Sense a set of keywords base on the category of your site. Ads will be selected from those keywords. Below are two examples of actual code from two wetpaint pages showing the keywords WP uses and the differences of the keywords by category. This is for Splats which was made in the caterogy Technology when the site was created. GA_googleAddAdSensePageAttr("google_hints","technology, electronics, PC, laptop, cell phone, smart phone, PDA, new technology, technology news, wireless technology, "); This is for a Warriors site under the catergory Gaming. GA_googleAddAdSensePageAttr("google_hints","Hobby, Games, Technology, Ring Tones, Music, Travel, Politics, Lifestyles, Art"); So, Splats will see different ads than the Warrior site for google ads. There are Hot Spots on a page. The closer to the center of the page, the more revenue sharing for that ad. Each standard ad position on a page has a different price tag associated with it. Advertisers bid on the various positions of their ads. Wetpaint will jockey ad placement on wiki pages to garner the most revenue of those ads and from wiki pages. That is the name of the game = Business. Do you find this valuable? |

Not having the resources to support a program is not necessarily running out of money, although money may play a big part of what resources can be availiable.Company resources are critical to profitability. Resources can include tangible resources such as goods and equipment, financial resources, and labor resources such as employees. It is important to maintain a profitability margin by managing resources properly. This holds especially true during downturns in the economy. The bottom line for all companies are the investors in that company. They want to see a return for the money they have invested. ROI (Return On Investment) This is the amount of revenue made by investing in a product, service, idea, or company. Bottom line information. "How much will I make if I put money towards this?" ROI had better show a profit can be made or the venture is not undertaken. The profit margin has to be maintained. A company does this by cutting back on resources first. This is called downsizing. Then it will review its services to slimline them. Or they will remove products from their line if they are not above the profit margin. The ad-free educational program has no ROI. It was a freebie. Perhaps the initial thought was the students would create their own wikis, thus adding to the Ad based revenue. Think about it 1 teacher 30 students. That is a 3000 percent possible ROI with that idea. Profitability and Economics only, caused the demise of the program. If the economy turns around and profitability increases, then and only then will you may see a return of the program. A word from a person, who has been around the business arena for a long time. The information provided in this thread is my opinion only, but based on real life experiences. Do you find this valuable? |

"You guys should of told the creators of the sites that you were going to do this...you people have really ripped everyone off!!!"Think about this: If your company was running out of money, would you continue to give out free things? Do you find this valuable? |

The point is, no one was notified about the change coming....courtesy to your members...same with the maintenence...there's no warning and you are in the middle of something and then find you can't post...for up to 3 hours!!The site I belong too has related sites joined together...why is the site I am on getting these adds and not the others. We generally always push out new releases at non peak internet times (i.e. late at night in the U.S.), and the amount of time that sites are in read-only mode is typically less than an hour. Often the push lasts about 20-30 minutes.

It all depends on when wetpaint updates. In any case, it's a good idea to save every few minutes so that you aren't too devastated when read-only mode strikes.

"I have learnt to do that now...I still feel they should put up a message that goes on to the top of everythread advising they are going to do maintence.."Your suggestion as to a global broadcast message for alerts is a great one and has been suggested in the recent past. I hope that Wetpaint takes this under consideration. Do you find this valuable? |

A lot of poeple are hoping it is something they will seriously look at...it would save a lot of stress and lost time...sometimes as I have said, its 3 hours before you can get back on..It would be ok if it were only 30 minutes...you could just take a break.
