modules won't show on locked site?

Now that I closed/locked my educational site to outside viewers I can't see any of the Content Modules. Is there a way to fix this? Thank-you. Do you find this valuable?

The content modules are disabled on a private site. The reasoning behind this, is some of the content can be seen via other web services, which defeats the privacy of the site. The only way to regain them is to change the permission of your wiki to something other than private. Do you find this valuable?

Thanks for the quick reply. since I don't truly understand the underpinnings of all this wiki stuff, there's no way to change this in the future? Do you find this valuable?

It likely is possible to change this. However as Dove said if the modules were available, then it would defeat the purpose of a private site. Do you find this valuable?

Silly question: is this because modules are meant to be exported to other sites, like a News Feed of sorts? Do you find this valuable?

Yes some of the content supplied through the Droplets option, can be shared with Myspace, Facebook, iGoogle and a host of other social networking sites. That is why Content and Droplet modules are not available. Hope assists you?

Yes, very helpful. Next question (most important) comes from a school administrator--> Does this mean that all data, files, images, sound etc. on the wiki is thus "not available" on a private site? Do you find this valuable?

The content on a private site will only be available to those who are members on that private site. Do you find this valuable?

Even to the "evil ones", the predators? How is this stuff accessed anyway? I suppose now I understand that making my site "private" has prevented to some degree the dissemination of my students' photos, I'm glad I did it. Whew! That means that if I allow photos I'll never be able to open the site again...probably (?) Ditto with the data,

The Golden Rule of the Internet. "If you put something on the internet, it can be taken by anyone on the internet. So be careful as to what is uploaded to any site" Private sites provide protection from the outside. That same guarantee of protection does not hold true for the members on the inside. Teach your students not to provide any personal information that may be of harm to them by the evil ones or predators. Using the internet has to come with some caution. So the use of avatars instead of actual photos, protecting ones passwords and email addresses is of utmost importance for students to practice. If the internet safety standards are taught and practiced, then it closes the opportunities for harm.
To answer your question on how is this stuff accessed? Any website, photo, image, graphic viewed on the internet, is also on your computer. The information is placed in temporary files to be used for caching. It is a good practice to clear cache and cookies before leaving a computer at school or at a library. This insures against someone else accessing the previous person's temporary files. For more information on Clearing Cache and good internet practices, visit these two pages here at Wetpaint.
