Growing Problem - HELP this Teacher!!!
Aug 11 2009, 10:54 AM EDT
I use my wetpaint site as a cyber classroom. This will be the 2nd year I've used the site and I'm beginning to encounter problems. All the users from last year should not be able to edit pages and content - a way to change the permission level of multiple users would be helpful. The other problem is that in a couple years the number of members to my wiki will become unmanageable - suggestions? What can I do?

Well, you can make the site private so only a certain amount of people can view and join your site. For example, a private site only allows people you invite via email to the site so they can view it. To make a private site, you need to be an administrator or above. Then, you need to go to settings, permissions, and change it to private, so only members you invite via email can join and view your site. Also, to prevent people from editing tables, you can set the site permissions to invite only. This allows you, as the creator, to decide who you want editing your pages. If you want people editing pages, you can make them writer or not. If you do not want your students editing pages, leave them as registered users. To change it to invite only permissions, go to settings, permissions, and change the editing permission to "only people I invite". This will stop members from editing pages unless you promote them. Go to their profiiles, and press change permissions. Change your curreent students to writers or even moderators, and for older stundents, make them registered users or ban them.

"I want only current students to be able to edit pages, it's why I chose a wiki. It's the former students i'm not sure what to do with."Then, make an invite only permission so only writers and up can edit pages. To do this, go to settings, permissions, and change the editing permissions to "Only people who I invite". Now, with your new students, make them writers so they can edit the pages, and then demote your old students to registered user. If you do not want them to view the site, then ban them. To promote and demote users, go to the user profile, hit the button "Change Permissions" and change the user permission to writer to make your current students writer. To demote users, go to their profile, hit the button "Change Permissions", and change the rank to registered user. Now, your old students cannot edit pages, but your new students can. Currently, there is no other way. You will have to change 70 users permissions if you do not want them to edit pages. You can leave them, but if you leave them writer, they can still edit pages. The only way I know on how to do it is change all your old students to registered user and all your new ones to writer.

I would have all the students cancel their membership to the site on the last day of class (or whenever it's appropriate). That way, you don't have to manually go through and ban each user or change their permissions.
