BUG New members notification
Jul 17 2009, 4:02 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 17 2009, 4:02 PM EDT
7 new members, no notification, 4 of them posted 200 pages of porno spam.
I deleted it all.
Can I get approval for new members.
Or stop them form posting until I am notified they have joined?
http://warintel11.wetpaint.com

They were back again today, banned them as they signed up, I had to reload membership page
to be aware of new members.
I checked my email spam file and they are not there, the notifications.

I've raised your question about notification email with our email person (who is out of the office today). She will follow up here herself with any information she can uncover on this problem.

Regarding how to prevent this in the future:

The only guaranteed-effective method to prevent spammers and vandals is to make your wiki private, so that only presumably-trusted people you or other wiki users invite (via our email invitation mechanism) can join. This is probably more restrictive than you're looking for, however.

Not quite as effective would be to make your wiki editable only by "writers" (in the Permissions section of Settings, this is the "Only people I invite" choice under "Who should be able to edit this website?"). Any user who wanted to could still join, but they wouldn't be able to edit pages, upload photos, or do many other content-creation tasks until they had been promoted to Writer role by a mod or admin. These users could still create discussion threads or add whatever content they wanted -- including pornographic photos -- to their profile pages however. But at least the damage would be contained; and a banned user's profile page automatically becomes invisible, so cleanup after a violation is much easier.

If you can give me a few of the vandals usernames I can probably help you prevent them from coming back to your site.

I'd like their IP's if I can get them.

My concern is I was never notified about them joining.
I'd like to be notified about new members before they can post.

Hi,
Wetpaint considers providing the ip address of a specific user to be a violation of their privacy. Jeremy can, however, ban the ip addresses of these troublesome users so that they will not be allowed to visit your site again.

I went ahead and banned the IP addresses associated to those accounts on your site. That should help. I can't give you the IP addresses because this could be considered a breach of our Privacy Policy.

Wetpaint does not currently have a feature in place that would notify and require your approval before a new user can post. The usefulness of this type of feature is questionable since you don't know if a new user is trustworthy until after they post anyway.
