Reporting an Interesting Bug
Jul 3 2009, 11:49 AM EDT
Hi,I'm one of the admins of from the Zombie Survival Wiki. (www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com) I recently recieved a request for help from one of our members. She had been reformatting her profile and had it sorted. However, whenever she hit the save button her profile turned out like this: http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/account/ViolentKisses No one knows how she managed to get material above the User Information bar. Her profile appears that way when viewed with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox 3.0. I hope I supplied you with enough information to address the issue. Thanks for any help in advance, Marsden 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Hey Marsden!I had a similar problem with this. I contacted Jeremy and he fixed it. But the problem is when he fixed it, lost all of my content. My suggestion to you is to send a message to the user like this... "Thank you for notifying us about your proile situation. We have emailed Wetpaint and they should be able to fix it for you, and return your profle to normal. We do not know if your content will stay the same, so we suggest that you copy all of the content. We are sorry for the problems this may have caused. It should be fixed very, very soon." So mesage Jason, Jeremy, and email info@wetpaint.com. Hope that helps! - Andrew 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thank you for replying. I was hoping that Wetpaint could offer a more permenant solution to the error, however, editing may be the easiest way to fix it. Once again, thank you very much for your help. Marsden 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

What Browser was the member using when they made the edit to their profile? Firefox has a problem, from my experience, with handling tables. Google Chrome is not a supported browser. I use both firefox and IE. I do all my edits on my wikis with IE and I do my browsing with Firefox.

This problem happens occasionally. It's apparently caused by an obscure bug in our WYSIWYG code, something so difficult to reproduce that we've never been able to make it happen in-house. We believe that nested tables are a big part of the problem, and these are used widely in user profile templates, so the problem seems to happen most often there. Sometimes the problem makes a profile page uneditable, but not usually. If we knew how to reproduce the problem, we'd be able to track down what causes it, and fix it. But we don't know how. (We've tried, believe me.) The only way we currently have to address this problem is to manually tweak our database to revert the profile page back to an earlier version. This does result in the loss of any information added in edits since the problem first occurred, as edwardandbellafan noted. If the user is willing -- and this isn't entirely clear, given the tone of the message I see on that page -- it ought to be possible to recreate it from scratch, or from an older version that doesn't have the layout problem. If she's willing to do that, let us know (or have her contact us directly) and we can advise on how to proceed. Phil Do you find this valuable? |

Ha... I'm familiar with this problem on the sites I'm managing... We advise our members to copy their profiles and paste it into a Word Document as a backup, before editing their profiles. (As there is no page history for profile pages, so you can't revert them) Whenever this occurs you can do this: don't go into EasyEdit... but select the whole profile page ( CTRL+A ) and copy it ( CTRL + C ) Paste it into a page (not a profile page) and save. On the profile page ... go into EasyEdit... > select the whole page > delete everything > Save > Refresh the page.. It will look like an unedited... empty profile page... but normal again... Next... copy anything you want (one at a time) from your saved page (not the profile page) and paste it into the profile page again... Or you can build the profile page first on a normal page... (you will have the opportunity to revert if a mistake is made)... and when it is ready... copy each and everything as a whole on the profile page again... Save! Good Luck! I had to resort to a different solution to fixing the profile.
