notification of thread on watched page
Jul 1 2009, 10:08 PM EDT
I was watching a page when someone started a thread on that page. I did not get a notification of that thread and am frustrated that I didn't know about it. I realize that I can put a watch on a thread, but how can I put a watch on something I don't know exists in the first place? Please tell me if there's anyway to set it up-- if I'm watching the page I should get notified about the discussions.

You would have to click refresh on the page, in order to see the thread show up.

My question was about the notification. I was never notified, even though I was watching the page.

Pages and threads are handled separately. When a new thread is created under a page, the page does not see it as a change to the page. Watching a thread will only watch threads that already exist. There is a work around to get email notification to newly created threads. Have the creator of the new thread leave you a thread on your profile saying a new thread was created on a certain page. You have to select preferences in your profile and set up to receive email notification whenever a new thread is added to your profile page. Threads on your profile page do not show up in the general discussion area. This process requires an extra step by your users, but it overcomes the absence of not receiving email notification of new threads being posted. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"When a new thread is created under a page, the page does not see it as a change to the page.Hi CryingDove, while your workaround is an option, getting people to actually read and follow directions can be hard. It also means more drudgery for the wiki's volunteers. It would be very nice if the wiki software were changed somewhat so that there is an option so that you are notified when a new thread is added to a page that you are watching (or, alternatively, that new threads on pages that you watch are automatically added to your watch list). These functions wouldn't be too hard to program and they would be very helpful. I should add that while I would really love this feature, I think that the Wetpaint programmers do an amazing job and appreciate that volunteers like you take the time to answer questions. I agree with ForestForTreesTMS on both the request and the appreciation for your work.

I agree with ForesForTreesTMS and Anonymously. It would be very helpful to me to know when a new discussion thread has been posted that I need to respond to. I don't always have the time to log in just to see if something new is there that needs my response. Most of the people on my wiki are not computer savvy and to try and get them to go around the problem as CryingDove suggests just isn't an option. Thanks for any help that could be given with this.
