version compare - chronology is reversed sometimes
Jun 29 2009, 12:02 PM EDT
This bug shows only up on some pages, but does so consistently on those pages: When comparing two versions from the page's history (Version Compare) the chronology is not consistent. In some cases the newer page is at the bottom, so when tracking the changes, additions appear as deletions and deletions appear as additions. This bug shows up on all browser (I tested it with Firefox, Chrome and IE) But for some reason that bug does not appear on all pages. So far, I was not able to figure out if there is a pattern. I posted a screen capture on http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/photos/album/96532/Bugs+-+user+reported Martin Windows XP Pro SP3 Firefox 3, Chrome 2, IE8 Pentium 4 2.8 Do you find this valuable? |

I too noticed this...And found out that it matters which version in the Page History you click first... Be sure to click/select the latest version first and the older version next... and then compare... Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for your reply!I tried your tip, but did not have any success. No matter which version I clicked first, the more current version was always below. Maybe someone from the Wetpaint team could look into this? Martin Do you find this valuable? |

Martin, there's something curious in your screenshot: it says that the March 31 version is "current." This suggests that you made it the current version of the page. If this is true, then it seems technically correct for the version compare to attribute the changes the way that it did.The page in question is in a different state now than you show in your screenshot, and I don't want to change it out from under you, so it's not possible for me to exactly reproduce the state shown in your screenshot. If you could try the same comparison using various different "current" states for the page (e.g., the March 31 version as current vs. the May 13 version as current), and tell me what behavior you see, I'd appreciate the data. Thanks for your reply Phil! The date just looks curious because the May version is from last year (2008). So yes, the March version in the screenshot really was the newest version at the time I took the screenshot. In the meantime, we have updated that page (June 30), but the problem remains - the May 28, 2008 page appears at the top and the June 30, 2009 page below. BTW: I didn't know that another than the most recent page could be set to current... thanks again for your help! PS: Cute pic! Do you find this valuable? |

The March 13th version of Energy was already "old" when I looked at the problem Wednesday. (There have been two revisions since then; one that you made and then deleted, and a second one made the following day by Rocio.) So I wasn't quite looking at the same scenario you were, but my results match yours -- we're definitely comparing the two versions backwards.I'll look deeper into this extremely curious problem and let you know what I find. And it's true: you can set any revision of a page to be the current revision. This feature is mostly used to retroactively "cancel" a problematic edit session. Our content management system has many features that are hardly ever seen by most users. Phil p.s.: That's really me, although I've grown just a bit since kindergarten. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
