Sign Up button can't be read by screen reader

Hi,

I've been told that the Sign Up button can't be read by screen reader, making it inaccessible to blind people.

I am not used to screen reader, but I know that the link to sign up to a wiki is the wiki URL and then /accountnew. So, for example, and a link that with text such as Join this Wiki, and link it to http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/accountnew/ Do you find this valuable?

You are correct.
The problem with readers is they are not able to read images. Wetpaint takes advantage of using images for navigational links and process links. This makes it very difficult for blind persons. If you are interested in joining wetpaint the only suggestion I can offer is to have a sighted friend enroll you on wetpaint.

The problem could be solved by supplying roll-over text or Alternte Text on all buttons and images. Readers would be able to read the text of the image. Do you find this valuable?

Now, that is for every site out there. It is difficult to do that for one site when Wetpaint has over 1,500,000 sites. Do you find this valuable?

Edward, what is being discussed here are button created by wetpaint's script. This is used everytime a page is visited. The browser is sent to fetch those scripts along with member credentials, images and other embedded codes and bulids a page for viewing. One set of programs on wetpaint is all that is needed to be modified. As far as indiviual pages containing user supplied images that would be a task. Wetpaint already has in place the option for atlernate text for images. Most members choose not to fill in that window when uploading images. Most do not see a use for it, so they skip it. This post shows that some welcome the atlernate text. It is a good habit to get into place alternate text on your images. Do you find this valuable?

Thanks for your replies.

As you say, CryingDove, it should just be a case of putting alternative text (or perhaps a <label>? The reader says "unlabelled button".)

Hopefully Wetpaint's programmers and designers are aware of accessibility issues and this button's label / alternative text just got left out by mistake.

Having been disabled myself in the past (had RSI and relied on voice recognition to use a computer) I'm keen to encourage people to make disabled-friendly sites.
