Open link in new window / tab

How do you specify whether clicking on a link opens in a new window / tab as opposed to staying in the same window? 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

A tab is better than opening a new window. Tabs allow you to have multiple pages open at once rather than having one website open per window. I suggest using tabs over windows. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

In internet Explorer it is a default operation
In Firefox you can right click on the link and select open in new window.

In either case if a new window is not created and the link opens
in the current window. Clear Cookies and Cache and it should work after that.

You can right click on the link and select "Open in new window" in both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Do you find this valuable?

Thanks, everyone.

But I was wondering how one can specify it when creating the link in Wetpaint. I think I saw another thread which says this isn't possible, but it was over a year old, so I was hoping things had changed.

Hmm, when I try it now I notice that links to other parts of the same wiki open in the same window, whereas links to external sites open in a new tab (I use Firefox), which is fine.

But I'm sure yesterday when I clicked on a link to an external site it opened in the same window, which I wouldn't want to happen. Seems to be a random thing.

Make sure your browser's cached files are cleared. This can cause external links to open in the same pane.

How to clear cache.

Aha, that would explain the randomness - thanks. Do you find this valuable?

If the link is to another page on the same Wetpaint site, it will open in the same tab/page as the current page. If it is to anywhere else, it will open in a new page. Do you find this valuable?

Yes, and that's probably as we want it. I was just a bit concerned / confused yesterday when it seemed to open a link to another site in the same window. Do you find this valuable?

Hmm. That would be weird. Is it still happening? Can you send me the URL of the page with the link on it? Do you find this valuable?

Hi Jason,

I've sent you a message with the link.

Thanks,

Ah! Now I have it. I just went to a test page and created a new link on it. After saving my change I then clicked on the link and it opened in the same tab.

OK, not a major problem, then. As long as it works for casual browsers (I mean people browsers, not IE etc.) that's the main thing.
