Wiki banners at the top of the page and at the foot of the page

I really dislike the banners promoting other wikis at the top of the screen. They are usually promoting some naff TV show, bear no relevance to my wiki, and actually are placed higher than my own banner, taking precedence over it.

Luckily I, and most of my wiki's members are carriers of an apparently rare gene that gives us a natural tendency to ignore online advertising, but they do look horrendous, completely spoil the look of the wiki's front page and I'm disappointed that Wetpaint is placing a higher value on a TV production company's wiki over the wikis of those people who make the Wetpaint community what it is, namely the thousands of wiki owners who take time to build these sites and develop them, and at the same time promote the whole Wetpaint thing with natural enthusiasm, for which there is no tangible price...that comes free.

I totally understand the need for Wetpaint to gain revenue, especially in today's financial climate. It is thanks to the revenue you raise that we obtain what has up to now been a terrific product, for free. I have absolutely no qualms whatsoever about the Adsense and targetted adds on the sites. I have absolutely no problem with the banner promoting other wikis at the bottom of each page, it helps to knit the network together.

But by giving more prominence to and placing more importance on a TV production company than on me I feel undervalued. I have always been enthusiastic aout promoting Wetpaint but the gloss has been taken off it somewhat. The last three years have been fun and you guys on here have been great but the little guys can't compete with the corporate sector and I think it may be time to think of something else.

Please don't take any of the above personally as it isn't intended to be...just my viewpoint.

A well reasoned and intelligent argument. I'm with you. Do you find this valuable?

Strange. I'm not getting that problem at all.
On the home page all the ads I get in general are those below the nav pane, and at the bottom of the page. Same on other pages.
On a discussion thread there are also some on the right hand side.
And on the site I am working on at the moment they are very welcome ads, all well targetted.
And I just realised all the usual TV show ads are not there at all! (Which is very welcome).

This is a new ad placement Wetpaint attempted to do, but after many suggestion here they decided to remove the ads from the top of the wikis. They are no longer there. Do you find this valuable?

You can always get an adblock addon such as adblock plus to filter out the banners. But as far as I am aware, the ads are no longer present. Wetpaint is a free service and they have to use advertising to make money. It's a tough balance between site appearance and profit.

Thank you for that, but please look at the third and fourth paragraphs of my original message...
