Optional Pay for Membership of a Wiki
May 8 2009, 3:50 PM EDT
I would like to suggest...Having a registration fee for joining a wiki. If I really am interested in a wiki and making it grow, I would buy a custom domain and switch it to Wetpaint, pay for ads to be removed, and I would pay to have a custom CSS. My suggestion is to make the fee payable to Wetpaint through PayPal, and then Wetpaint would mail a check to the wiki creator mailing address. Maybe every month or so. That is my suggestion, because if I am going to create a wiki and pay for a custom domain name, ad-free, as well as custom CSS Skin, I want to be making somewhat of a profit! * NOTE: I know that custom CSS Skins are not yet available to regular Wetpaint users. Do you find this valuable? |

An option!Meaning only Wetpaint wikis that want to can. Example, a very popular wiki should charge. A, non-popular, wiki shouldn't charge. Maybe I should say you must have a custom URL, ad-free, and Custom CSS Skin. * NOTE: I know that custom CSS Skins are not yet available. Do you find this valuable? |

I don't think that's a good idea. It's not fair for Wetpaint users who don't ahve enough money, and if you do it, that just means that if you want a successful wiki, you will have to pay for it!

Maybe you could have selected premium content on your wiki that you must pay for in order to view. So it's free to join but some pages are exclusive to premium members.

And, how do you allow some people to view it?It seems that lacking pages to all users, but allowing some users to view it could come in handy. My whole point is, if I am going to spend money for a custom domain, and an ad-free wiki, I want to make sure that I am making a profit in return. And I wasn't thinking of charging a monthly or yearly fee of $20.00, a one-time fee of $3.99 maybe more and/or less. I do like Madusha's idea, the only problem is the locking pages, or making only some pages user protected. Example, a user that is permitted to view that page can view it rather than someone who didn't pay cannot view it. Does anyone get where I am coming from? Do you find this valuable? |

"yeah... and wat if u can't put ur address or credit card online? It would be through PayPal which is used by Wetpaint anyways. It is the simplest way, if you use PayPal, you are not sending that person your credit card and/or billing address information! Do you find this valuable? |

This should be an addition to the "Password Protected Pages" Thread:http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/thread/696413/password+protected+pages Once the user pays the amount of money required, they receive the password to access the page Do you find this valuable? |

I do not understand why some people do not like this suggestion. If you are paying, for example, $7.99 a year for a domain name, and $19.95 a month for ad-free, then you would be paying $247.39. Now, if you have exclusive information on your wiki you can charge a one time fee to view a certain amount of information. If you have, for example, 20 members a month who pay the $3.99 fee to view the content, you would be making $957.60 a year on your wiki, meaning you would be making a profit of $710.21. It is not a bad idea. Many fan-sites or information sites charge a $10 - $20 registration fee, or sometimes a monthly fee. Does anyone agree with me now? Do you find this valuable? |

Still, the point of Wetpaint is being free. If this ever does become an option, I will not use it.

So, if you put all of your money towards a custom domain name, and ad-free wiki, you wouldn't mind? Putting all the money towards a wiki, with nothing in return. I would like this option!By the way, Wetpaint provides free wiki service, it says nothing about joining wikis is free. You get the option. Can I have a Wetpaint employee's opinion on this possible feature? Do you find this valuable? |
