Banning Hackers/Trolls
Mar 19 2009, 9:05 AM EDT
There is a hacker who repeatedly joins as a registered user, but his/her username is a repitition of the administrator's username, for example, Bumblestar. The lower case 'L' in the name is replaced by a capital 'i' so it looks exactly the same. Bumblestar and BumbIestar. I wrote it in two different forms, but it still looks the same. The hacker then contacts a mod/another admin and tells them that he/she has been 'demoted' into a RU, whereas the real admin is STILL an admin. Sometimes a mod may not check and promote the hacker to an admin/mod. Then, the hacker will delete every page, thread, ban every member, and make the site into a total chaos. I think Baby_Apple and bedding7 were invited to WCC2 to fix this problem. This is the site I'm referring to. Another type of hacker names himself/herself Virus2.0, sitedestroyer, UnfairAdvantage100. These names point out that he/she's a hacker, but the biggest problem is he/she hacks a mod/admin and promotes himself, and when the admins ban him he continuously unbans himself and promotes himself. Eventually, the poor mod gets banned for no reason at all. What is the solution to this problem? I personally have been hacked twice. UnknownZombie and Unknown_Snowfur were my other accounts. I got hacked because I created a site. Sniff. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

We can't really do anything about the forged name issue. Verify before you promote someone. Look and see when their account was created. If it shows they just signed up today, they're probably not who you think they are. Moderators need to not share their passwords or make them so easy to guess. If the hacker doesn't have a moderator's password they won't be able to unban themselves.

There's no "hacking" going on. Most of the time, we investigate to find that someone has shared their password or made it simple to guess. When a Moderator or Administrator account becomes compromised like this, it's easy to promote other accounts, ban the real moderators, and generally wreak havoc on the site.Make sure your passwords are strong. A good password is 8 or more characters and contains mixed-case letters, numbers, and symbols. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jeremy is correct, the password guessers are not hackers. According to Webster online, the definition of a hacker: "a person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system." If you want to avoid future password guesses, ask your Moderators to verify the member the are promoting by checking contributions, compliments, searching their name on members list, etc. Also make sure Moderators have safe passwords that include numbers and symbols, and do not relate to the persons interests, birthday, etc.Good luck, and please keep that in mind.-Community Moderator Baby Apple 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Also, a tip for keeping hackers out is making your own account with an "i" instead of an "L". That way no such account will be created against you, and if you want you could make the password random like, "87kfnangpaojfka" so no one will guess it, and you won't have to access the account again.Good luck! -RU Waterflower1 Do you find this valuable? |
