Banning an IP address of a banned member
Mar 13 2009, 8:19 PM EDT
I would like to have some info / steps on how to ban an IP address that is used by a banned member. This member registers every time under a different account name for the last 8 months... Today he registered 6 times under different names and is being harassing all the time... Sending "mass" messages by taking the effort and time to send over 850 members... 15 at a time... alphabetically... Posting harassing threads... We banned him consequently... but he already told us... he would keep on coming in... For the time being... we have set our site settings to private... until we figured out how to ban his IP address.... finally There is no way to click on his IP somewhere... and ban it... We got his IP though... We do not allow unregistered members... so there were no anonymous posts.. So can anyone tell me how to do this? Thank You so much for your time... If this becomes a serious issue, Wetpaint will consider IP-Banning the user from the network.

IP banning is a temporary solution, as IP addresses do change for most people from time to time. Going to another computer at a different location is any easy way around it, too.

Fortunately for us, most spammers have little knowledge of hacking/programming, etc.

Thank You soo much for your instant replies! But I guess banning an IP address will only work once he registered again...I tried it but did not work... I am aware of the problems of banning an IP... and that it is a temporary solution... After consulting our chief administrator and the creator of our site, who are not available at the moment, I will get back to you about handing over the details of this harasser to Wetpaint... BTW... this harasser has a lot more knowledge... about hacking/programming... then we would wish he had... Again Thanks, Jivanda 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

You can always take the site private for a while. Trolls usually get frustrated pretty quickly.
