Task Manager to prevent malware...
Feb 4 2009, 10:27 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 4 2009, 10:27 PM EST
Can I just click TASK MANAGER and END Firefox or Internet Explorer upon the malware window pop-up and before it scan my and PC and install the virus. It seems I would never had the option to cancel this process in the browser.

Thanks!

Manny, you can't rely on your browser, operating system or antivirus software in this case. The rogue malware installs and executes before you are aware of it. You have to remove it after the fact.

Comodo Internet Security is award-winning free firewall and antivirus software. If you install it, you can get help removing this malware, either through going to the Comodo forums, or opening a support ticket.

(I have the pro version, which costs $39/year, but I open up a chat window and the technicians delete the malware from my computer remotely while I sip my coffee.)

You can get the free version at freewaregeeks.com http://www.freewaregeeks.com/?page=detail&get_id=726&category=45

or at download.com

You can get either the free or the paid version at Comodo's website. Both versions use exactly the same firewall and antivirus software; what I pay for is the convenience of not having to learn how to do all the techy stuff by myself.

That will work, as far as I know.
You shouldn't be getting the virus from your wetpaint wiki anymore though.

Thanks, Baby Apple. Wetpaint users appreciate your work to keep malware out of the site. But you'll never eradicate it forever because hackers are canny, which is members should know about how to protect themselves with security software.

(I feel silly for forgetting to mention that the Comodo software I described yesterday works on a default-deny basis. This means that unless a file is on Comodo's whitelist, or unless Manny specifically says, "Oh, sure, malware, go ahead and execute," it never has a chance to install.)

Regards,
Katharine

No, it might not work. Some viruses, Trojan Horses, and malware stay alive if they are strong enough. If you have a virus and no anti-virus software, you should just turn off your computer for 15 seconds. Some people restart computers, but if a virus is strong, it can still life.

But do not worry; you can not get malware from any Wetpaint wiki.
