Search improvement to handle Plural avoid duplication & dissapointment
Oct 20 2008, 6:37 AM EDT I think this is a common problem with english. The user might search for the plural or the singular. If they dont find it they either go away dissapointed (even if the info ewas in fact there in the other form) or worse they make a new page and someone has to deal with it later linking the one to the other (and having to decide which one is 'right' for the Wiki in question. What is needed (on an english language site anyway) is for the search engine to look for an ending (like 'S') at the end of the requested search term, and if it is not there do several searches for specific pages, one 'as is' like it does now, and then others with the possible endings, which could be delivered below, then the 'fuzzy' hits that come below today. Similarly, if there is a plural ending (like 'S') at then end do a search without it as well as the search with it. This might produce a few odd results, but its better that the user knows they are there. I've tried on several sites to 'lay down a rule' saying 'keep it singular' but inevitably the searchers dont know that and the editors dont comply. A fix to the search engine would be best! Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_plural for a realtively short list of the endings affected. How about it?? Do you find this valuable? |

Oct 20 2008, 6:53 AM EDT Oh, just one more point - such a tool would make wetpaint unique amongst wiki providers, and IMHO a real USP (even if it isnt the best already - and it is for me, I tried pbwiki and wikispaces and for various reasons Wetpaint came out top). Keep it there! Tony Do you find this valuable? |

Extea usage of same algorithm
Oct 21 2008, 11:16 AM EDT the 'suggest links' feature is great. Using the above algorithm, more links would be suggested. Do you find this valuable? |
