accepting friend requests

I would like to be able to check someone out before accepting them as a friend. This feature does not appear to be available; is that correct? When people have names that you do not know this makes it very hard to assess if they should be accepted, is there a way to email them forst to find out who they are/what their interest is in our wiki? We are developing a wiki for a specific project but do want to invite others to join but don't want the site cluttered with extraneous information. Do you find this valuable?

You can click any user's name to access their profile or send them a personal message. Do you find this valuable?

Two options I can think of:

1. Make your site Private (this allows only people you invite to join)

...but maybe you want people you didn't know before to find your site and join? Not much you can do about a background check, so...

2. Make more people you trust Moderators so that extraneous content can be eliminated quickly and users can be banned if they are being counter-productive to your efforts
Do you find this valuable?
